"Estimate > The wooden screen doors on our screened porch needed replacement. I called and requested a quote. The sales rep came out. He was on time, friendly and professional. He took photos, and we discussed options. He recommended that we replace the current doors with higher quality doors, making the project more expensive than I had planned, but with the goal that they would last much longer. I received a detailed estimate by email the next business day. The estimate seemed to be fixed price, and there was no mention of possible overages. About half the cost was the materials (doors, closures) and the other half was labor (install, haul away). Scheduling > A few weeks later I scheduled the work. We went back and forth by email a few times to find a date and time that worked. (A couple times they emailed and by the time I responded the spot was gone, so we had to try again. Understandable, but I'd recommend picking up the phone to reduce back and forth.) We ended up with a 3-5 pm timeframe. Work > The day of the scheduled work, I received a call at about 4 that the workman was running late but would be there soon. I expressed concern that it would be dark out, and it was an outdoor project. I got another call at 4:30 that he wouldn't be able to pick up the materials and get there in time. I worked with the office to schedule another date and time. The rescheduled day of the work, the workmen called to let me know they could come a bit early. (I wasn't home yet, but they were there when I arrived.) They were professional and friendly. We discussed and clarified that knobs for the old doors were damaged and couldn't be used, as detailed in the estimate. They completed their work and cleaned everything up well. When it came time to pay they had added $70 for labor to install the knobs, which wasn't expected, but we paid in full and I planned to call the office the next day since it was late. The completed work looks good. The doors are sturdy and close well. Follow up > I called the next day and spoke with Luke in the office. He confirmed that their estimates are fixed price. He called me back the next day to clarify that the door closers they had brought required more time than expected to install so they added the charge. I asked him to reconsider the cost (either a refund or discount), because it wasn't mentioned in the estimate and the team didn't clarify it with us before they completed the work, or give us the option to let us do it ourselves later. They cashed my check later that week but I still hadn't heard back. I followed up by email and received a response that they would send me a $40 refund check (of the $70 unexpected). I received the refund check in the next week in the mail. To improve the experience, they could have communicated with me better and more proactively to schedule the work initially, and to reschedule the work on the original day; communicated more clearly about potential additional costs, and secured my approval for the additional costs before the work was preformed; and communicated better to follow up on my inquiry, waited to cash my check until they had confirmed their solution, and proactively notified me when they came to a solution. I am satisfied with the quality of the work."
