"Jonathan did a wonderful job. We were under a very tight schedule and on very little sleep from an all night large job he came thru on schedule. From the estimate and review of carpets thru the install, Johnathan was kind, communicative, professional and thorough. It was a pleasure to meet and have him do his craft. We wish him much continued success and our thanks for a job well done! Hire him, you won't be disappointed! And no I am not a relative or close friend. I am glad I met him five days ago."

"I have done a lot of home renovation projects in the past, and I wish ALL contractors were like Mike. From start to finish of this ENORMOUS project, Mike was amazing to work with. He showed up when he said he was going to show up, he responded promptly to emails and texts, and he remembered all of the little details that we discussed along the way. His estimate was accurate and included all of the components that we talked about, and then we made some adjustments to the original estimate, which were also perfectly captured. And on top of all that, his quote/estimate was one of the most reasonable ones that we received (and we got 6 quotes). He was so knowledgeable with the information and advice that he provided, and I had complete trust that he would do a superb job. We had to move out of the house while the work was ongoing. He kept in touch the entire time, providing updates regularly. I never doubted that things were going well and according to plan. He had a team of two additional guys and they were also very pleasant and very hard working. And the work that was done was unbelievable quality. It looks so beautiful - a complete transformation of the home! In addition to the flooring, we paid Mike to install new 6 inch baseboards, which was a great addition. I would recommend Mike and Universal Flooring to anyone who is considering new hardwood floors or any flooring work for that matter. We will certainly use him again in the future if ever needed. THANK YOU MIKE!!!"

"We own a historic home in Acton, and decided it was time to update the first floor with some new hardwood. Our home was originally built in ~1850 and had gone through several rehabs in the 19th and 20th century. The result of this piecemeal work was that each room on our first floor was on a different level, and these rooms were connected by a series of poorly designed transitions featuring a random collection of remnant carpet and tile. We wanted to tear all of this out, level the floors, and finally have a nice, even, single-level first floor tied together beautifully with high-character flooring. Our first call was to a local flooring store specialist who gave us the following terrifying assessment: the structure of the home was too old and the scope of the work was too great for him to even give us an estimate, so he politely declined to even get involved. It was in this nervous and anxious state that I reached out to Ed, who brought in his crew to do a full evaluation and put me immediately at ease. I knew exactly what I wanted in our home, and Ed listened carefully, paying specific attention to each of my many requirements. Unlike our first estimator, Ed and his team developed a plan to tackle the most challenging aspects of my project. He provided me with a fair and reasonable estimate, and highlighted the areas where there were some “unknowns” - where costs might run over due to surprises revealed during teardown and reconstruction. As Ed and I had expected and discussed, there were a LOT of obstacles on this project - some of the construction choices made by the previous rehabs made it necessary to reframe and rejoist the floors in the dining room and back hallway. Although this did represent additional expense, Ed was up front and honest with me about this expense, and presented me with alternative less-expensive options if I wanted to proceed differently. In the end my wife and I realized that we had a true professional working for us, and that our project must be “done right the first time” or we would never be truly satisfied with the result. It was in these challenging moments when it was obvious that Ed was the right man for our job. Imagine standing in your kitchen and staring down into your basement, because the dining room floor has been completely removed. In a moment like that, you want someone you really trust running your job - for me, Ed was and remains that guy! In the end, the project was completed on time and on budget for the original scope of work requested. Additional work requested was achieved quickly and on a reasonable budget - the total cost of the project including change requests was just about what we had expected to pay in the beginning. In total our project cost $26K - about $7.5K of that was spent on the actual hardwood flooring itself, which I purchased and paid for separately from a retailer specializing in antique floors. In the end, I paid Ed about $18.5K for the following list of work, which includes both his labor and materials: - Tear out ~1200 sqft of carpet, tile, and linoleum flooring - Remove several layers of unnecessary subfloor totaling perhaps an additional 1500 sqft - Complete reframing and rejoisting of dining room and back hallway, totaling perhaps 800-1000 sqft of complete rebuild - Leveling of entire first floor after rejoisting using fresh plywood subfloor Installation of 1200 sqft of solid hardwood floors using both glue and staples (“earthquake proof!”) - Rebuild and refinish 4 wooden steps leading to our garage - New baseboards installed throughout first floor - A series of miscellaneous small “finishing” projects - replacing sheet rock, cutting a new door and rehanging it, replacing some door trim, replacing one carpeted step in the dining room, etc. In addition to this work, Ed and his crew helped us with a few minor “favors” at no expense - helping us remove and the reinstall our washer/dryer, helping us throw away a piano we no longer wanted, etc. Aside from his work, I found Ed and his crew to be pleasant to work with - friendly, fun, honest, and easy to share a laugh. It made the whole experience much more positive overall and my wife and I were very comfortable having all of them in our home. I definitely will be hiring Ed for more work in the future. Thank you!"

"John and his team are fantastic and we highly recommend. They installed a not to easy stair carpet and cut a runner for our hallway. They are quick, friendly, thorough, and price their jobs fairly. We couldn’t have asked for a better team. We will definitely work with them again on future projects."

"I had an mental mage of what I  wanted the bathroom to look like. Jane made my image into reality. In every step of the project, Jane would suggest fixtures, tiles, colors etc. and I would agree with her suggestions and I am very happy with the results. Each of her teams that did a part of the project were very polite and professional while doing terrific work.  My new bathroom is beautiful.
After the bathroom, I wanted a kitchen backsplash.  Jane's suggestions are so good that I did not pick or see the final tile or color, I just went with her suggestion. . My new kitchen backsplash is perfect..

FAQs for carpet repair, refasten, or stretch projects in North-marshfield, MA

Removing a rug costs around $0.40 to $0.50 per square foot. This includes the fee for a contractor to roll up the rug and haul it away in a vehicle for disposal or recycling. If they need to move furniture, they might charge an additional $0.25 to $0.30 per square foot of furniture.

If your carpet has minor damage—like a single area that requires stretching, patching, or cleaning—it might be less expensive to pay for carpet repair than remove and replace it. Repairing carpet costs around $210 per project.

The cost of carpet cleaning is about $190 for a three-bedroom home, so it’s a good idea to have your carpet cleaned at least once a year. But most carpeting only lasts 10 years. If your carpet is nearing the end of its life span, it might be more cost-effective to remove and replace your carpet than to clean and repair it. The average cost to install a new carpet is about $1,800.

Search our directory of carpet removal companies and services to find an affordable, screened contractor near you. All HomeAdvisor listings are vetted, reviewed, and rated by homeowners, so you can be sure to find a local pro qualified for your project. Get at least three quotes to compare prices and the timeline for your project.

Commercial carpet removal usually costs on the lower end of the carpet removal price range, around $1.10 per square foot or even less. Carpet installation contractors often offer discounted rates for larger projects, like commercial carpet removal and installation. Similarly, you might be able to negotiate a lower residential carpet removal cost if the carpet is pulled up throughout your entire home.

Most cities accept old carpets as bulk trash, but you may need to schedule a special pickup and prepare the carpet properly. Remove any nails or glue residue, cut the carpet into manageable pieces, and roll and secure them. Alternatively, you can take your old carpet to a local recycling center for a small fee, where it can be processed and repurposed.

Yes, you can remove carpet yourself if you're ready for a labor-intensive task. DIY carpet removal requires heavy lifting and tools like utility knives, pliers, and pry bars. The process is generally straightforward but time-consuming for stapled-down carpet. If your carpet is glued down or you're worried about damaging the subfloor, hiring a professional is best to ensure the job is done safely and efficiently.
