"Custom wood railing with an Italian Cottage vibe. One of the only guys around Utah that does custom wood railings, making all pieces. Very impressed and will be working with him on other homes and projects."

"I recently hired Wasatch Carpentry and Rails to construct a custom-made wooden staircase with handrails, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. From start to finish, their professionalism shone through, and the quality of their work was truly extraordinary. They kept me updated every step of the way, ensuring that I was completely satisfied with the progress. Additionally, their prices were not only reasonable but unmatched in comparison to other quotes I received. Without a doubt, I would enthusiastically do business with Wasatch Carpentry and Rails again. Highly recommended!"

Michael arrived on time.  He was very professional.  I showed him the faucet that needed replacing.  He noticed my air conditioner hose was rather close to the old faucet so when he installed the new one he put it at an angle so it would be easier to hook up the hose.  I really appreciated this observation.  I also asked him why my front faucet would rattle the pipes when I turned it on?  This was not the reason he was here but Michael took the extra time to analyze the situation.  It was discovered that my pressure reducing value was only working on the pressure in the house and not with the outside pipes.  He suggested a new pressure reducing value be installed in the proper place to accommodate the high water pressure both inside and outside.   He explained what the cost would be for the part and his labor.  I really appreciated Michael taking the time to answer all of my questions and going beyond the service call to analyze my other problem.  The quality of his work was great and it is so nice to have someone that I can depend on for future maintenance issues.  He does more than plumbing and I will definitely use him in the future for work that is required around my house.

"Miguel did an outstanding job and even though there were surprises for him (it's an old house), there were none for us - he finished in the timeframe he bid. We had question on the finish of the wood - Miguel made a special trip to bring us a sample. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome."

"Jason did a great job for us. We purchased a cabin in the Unitas that needed work to the back half of the cabin..the previous owners added to the cabin but did nothing protect the wood. As a result the buffalo siding was dry, seriously warped & missing ant corner protection. Additionally the facia & soffit on the front half of the cabin needed serious attention. Jason looked at the work needed, provided a quote & time frame. He completed the work on time & on budget. We will us him again up in the future."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in North Salt Lake, UT

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
