"I am familiar with paving as my family was in the construction business in my youth. The contractor and his crew were on time, completed the repaving job in 1/2 day including driveway widening. The work was seamless which is no small task on a hill. Also the team was very neat. I've waited several weeks to write this interview to see how the driveway responded to hot weather. After allowing the asphalt to set up for 4 days as recommended, I can affirm that it looks great."

"Jim and his crew are incredible. I requested a quote for a new paved driveway and Jim called me himself to explain the scope of work and pricing. He is very accommodating, responsive, transparent and it’s clear that he is very proud of the work they do. They are very skilled and experience and completed my project with ease. They pitched the driveway perfectly to direct all water away from my house. They got me on the schedule extremely quickly, showed up on time, and were very knowledgeable and professional. They treated my driveway as if it were their own and wanted everything to be perfect. It is clear that they are the best at what they do and I would recommend them to anyone looking for these services."

"I Had a driveway, a year and a half ago installed. It is still solid and in great shape. Tony and his daughter came out recently and steel coated it. Tony and his daughter came out the other day and straightened out some edges for free. Amazing family company and stands by their work. I Highly recommend this company for your next paving project. If considering a paving company. Blacktop has over 50 years in the business."

"The concrete and the asphalt service required different service groups. Both were very professional, timely, polite and provided excellent results. Both clean-up were done well and they explained everything before each step. We are extremely pleased with the work and would highly recommend this company to anyone. Thank you."

"We have an extremely long & steep winding driveway that hadn't been sealed for quite a while. To say that Hicks Paving did a good job for us would've be an understatement -- everything about their customer communication and actual workmanship was truly outstanding! When we asked for an estimate, I heard from Charlie Hicks within a few days. We then had to wait for a few weeks due to unusually wet weather. When we finally encountered a semi-dry spell, they immediately gave us a date and time -- and they then arrived exactly when they said they would. Almost to the minute. How often does that happen when you hire a contractor? Hardly ever. Their 3-man crew then carefully prepped the driveway. Blew off all leaves and other debris. Edged a few areas where mulch and grass had encroached. Then sprayed the entire driveway, several turn-around areas, and even the narrow strip of asphalt in front of our mailbox, with a heavy coat of sealcoating oil. We have several stone walls adjacent to our driveway, and they were extremely careful to not get any of the sealcoating on any of our stonework -- nor on any of concrete strips where our garages met our driveway. There was no need for any cleanup after they were done. About 2 days later everything was dry to the touch, and it looked like we had just installed a "brand new" driveway. Yeah, Hicks Paving's sealcoating job actually looked that good! We've lived in this house for about twenty-five years, and over that time we've had our driveway sealcoated at least 6 times. But the last job by Hicks Paving was, by far, the best sealcoating job that we've ever encountered -- and they were also a pleasure to work with."

"JH and Sons Paving were doing other driveways in our neighborhood. We were interested in having work done on our driveway. It was pointed out to us that water was not draining away from the garage and house as it should be. First we decided to have the work done on the driveway. We were really pleased with the outcome. We had been aware of this because some of the shrubs by the house had previously died and a landscaper said it was because they "don't like wet feet." We did not realize that it was something structurally that we could/should correct until JH and Son told us so. We decided to proceed to correct the problem. After regrading the walks they put in new pavers, and moved landscape plants to suit the new design. They were very courteous and professional. They have lots of big equipment which allowed the, to complete this job in only a couple of days. They left everything in good order, re-seeding areas as needed. We are enjoying our new driveway and walkways. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for asphalt paving installation projects in Pen Argyl, PA

Most driveways wrap up in roughly a week. Allow two to three days for installation, followed by an additional two to three days for the surface to cure. Concrete and asphalt follow this timeline, whereas a gravel job often finishes more quickly. Laying out the schedule upfront makes it easier to plan your week and your budget.

Sealer prevents water, salt, and UV rays from damaging the surface. Apply a fresh coat every one to three years, and you’ll slow down the growth of cracks, avoid pricey repairs, and keep the driveway looking sharp. A local professional can handle the job efficiently and ensure even coverage.

Material is the significant driver when it comes to the lifespan of a driveway. Asphalt stays strong for about 20 years, concrete lasts 30 to 40 years, and paver stones can last 50 to 100 years because you can swap out damaged bricks. With regular top-ups, a gravel drive can also reach the century mark. Knowing these timelines helps you map out long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

Repaving strips everything down and starts fresh, letting you change the layout or improve drainage before pouring new material. Resurfacing, on the other hand, adds a top layer over a solid base, giving you a facelift without the need for a complete demolition. Go with repaving when the base is failing; choose resurfacing when the structure is sound and you just need a new surface.
