"Warnie is such a down-to-earth guy. I had a couple of other top-rated companies come give me estimates, but I immediately knew Goodside was the right way to go. I'm an advocate for DIY, but there are some things that are always best left up to the professionals. I needed an electrician to check our panel because it didn't look safe because the prior homeowners did very poor work. I wasn't moved into the house yet, so Warnie was able to go to my house and FaceTime with me to show me exactly what needed to be done. He took the time to explain why things had to be done specific ways to bring it to code. What I really appreciated is how Warnie took my concerns and found a solution for everything. I had mentioned that we planned on finishing our basement eventually, so he recommended a panel with more than enough slots to accommodate any upgrades we make to the home and for any future homeowners to come. Warnie came to visit in-person to make sure that I understood the entire process and that he could get it started as soon as I was ready. I was informed of each milestone and was always updated. I approved the work order and the permit was approved the next day that they applied for. They coordinated with the electric company and were able to start the job the day after the permit was issued! His TEAM arrived early in the morning and was done within a couple of hours. I'm going to have a re-wire completed afterwards (meaning there will be no indoor power yet), but Warnie made such a thoughtful suggestion and wired the circuit for my alarm system to the panel so my alarm could still function. The work completed is beyond professional. The work area was cleaner than when they started. I never once felt pressured by Goodside, I truly felt like I was talking to a good friend. You'd seriously be making a mistake if you didn't use Goodside."

"Very good job by Rich and his co-worker. They were friendly and efficient. I had an electrical outlet in our master bathroom that just stopped working one day. When it did, I replaced the outlet with new components but it still did not work. So Rich spent a lot of time troubleshooting it, checking various other outlets in the bedrooms next to it, in the other upstairs bathroom, etc until he found the source of the issue, a wire worked itself loose in the electrical outlet in the powder room on the first floor - and this disrupted the power going to the outlet in the master bath. Rich also added an additional outlet we wanted in the master bathroom and replaced the security light outside with a fixture I had purchased for him to install. I would easily recommend Rich and use him again"

"These guys saved our lives - possibly literally. I was concerned about some flickering lights and called Livewire. Within a couple hours I was meeting with an electrician and he immediately saw that we had a real problem with some arcing from one of the phases of my main breaker. In less than 24 hours from his initial visit for an estimate he and his crew had replaced the entire service (upgrading from 100a to 200a in the process). The bill was exactly as quoted and they were quick, clean, and courteous. 5/5 would definitely hire again."

"Brian and his crew where great to work with. He explained what they would do to correct the problems I had with my electric and the work was done in a timely manner. They even ran into a glitch installing a light switch in my basement but they went above and beyond to make it work. He also found some wiring problems and corrected those. They also clean up after the work is done. They were pleasant and even fun to deal with. I found their pricing to be very reasonable. I will definitely use them again."

"Once I called, they quickly sent someone out to give me an estimate. They answered all my questions and informed me of how they would tackle the work. The estimate I received was nearly 1/3 less than a competitors work, and I liked that they would not be running any wires outside my house. The most "damage" there would be would be a small hole in my dining room ceiling to run wire up to an outlet upstairs. It took about 3 weeks, to get the job scheduled, but all along the company was informative (they were going to be a little later than anticipated the day of the work) and professional. The technician Joseph G and his assistant were amazing! Again, answering any questions I had the day of and the best part is, they didn't even need to make a whole in the ceiling. These electrical magicians were able to run the wire up and through the wall to the upstairs outlet. Needless to say, I would hire CW Electrical again in a heartbeat."

"Same day service - within 4 hours of calling. Super professional on all fronts. Went above and beyond checking the panel itself on top of the switch and wiring repairs. Overall excellent and timely service."

"Very personable, listened to what I was able to relay about my project, gave me realistic options and recommended one solution and stated the reasons why - worked to replace my panel until it was complete and added a generator connection that I had been wanting. Top notch work and service - will hire again for future projects!"

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Pittsburgh, PA

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
