"Alan Mikol and his amazing crew made the dream of staying in my home a reality. I can age in place because of these dedicated men. Alan listened intently to my physical limitations and my desire to have a bathroom that maintains the style of my home. His vast knowledge of designing handicap-accessible bathrooms was meticulously executed by foreman Steven, James, Tony, Matt and David. The team was punctual and exceptionally courteous, staying on schedule while at the same time protecting my home from damage. Steven is an exceptional group leader. He has a unique ability to be unfazed by challenges or changes. In addition, James put the final touches on the renovation with his attention to detail making the renovation a complete success. Thank you, A.M. Window & Construction, for a job superbly done. C.E.H. "

"Jim and Danielle help me take a room that was old-fashioned and in need of a remodel into a space that is very warm and inviting. With his guidance on the day-to-day work and his ideas for how to design the space, he was a valuable resource for me through the process. He gave me lots of ideas and choices from flooring to fixtures. As the crews that came into the house were friendly and considerate of my privacy as I work from home. They worked hard and completed their piece of remodel as planned. I highly recommend Jim and Danielle Katz at Casade Customer Renovations, LLC. "

"Mike and Jared installed a second AC system in our attic. They were reasonably priced, super easy to work with and very responsive. The work was done on time and exceeded our expectations so we hired them to completely remodel our master bathroom!"

"After consulting a total of three kitchen remodelers / contractors my wife and I made the right decision to with Dwell Construction. From start to finish Shane was forthright and flexible to what our vision and needs were. He provided several options as to the finished remodel. Everyone has a budget and was able to meet our specifications without sacrificing quality and workmanship. His team was on site daily from start to finish. Any little hiccups were addressed and taken care of. The kitchen remodel looks fantastic and has added value to our home. If you are considering a remodel or upgrade we recommend Shane and his team unequivocally. You won’t be disappointed. "

"We hired Ty to do a kitchen remodel. He asked what we were looking for and if we were set on anything particular. We gave him our ideas and of course asked his input. He came up with a few ideas and presented them to us. Once everything had been decided, he was extremely on point with bringing the project to life. He was professional throughout the entire project, communicated everything, was punctual and completely transformed our kitchen. We plan on remodeling our bathroom next and he is the man for the job. "We hired Carmen to finish our basement in our house and we gave him just skeleton ideas of what we wanted. I'm glad we let him run with it because we couldn't be happier. Carmen is incredibly professional, talented and creative. I think what's not often talked about with contractors is how they treat their clients and Carmen is the most personable guy we've ever worked with. He was always cognizant of us working from home and was always accessible for questions both before, during and now after the job. We look forward to him doing our master bath next. We wouldn't hire anyone else to do kitchen, bath or basement work. Can't say much other than the completed job is above and beyond what we expected!"

FAQs for kitchen remodel projects in Pittsburgh, PA

Your galley kitchen needs adequate clearance around any island installation to maintain functionality. Most galley kitchens lack sufficient width for traditional islands, as these layouts prioritize efficiency in smaller spaces.

If your kitchen has an unusual width, consult with a kitchen designer who can evaluate your specific dimensions and recommend appropriate solutions. For narrower spaces, consider alternatives like rolling carts or narrow work tables that provide additional surface area without permanently restricting movement.

Kitchen remodels require six to 10 weeks for completion, though timelines vary based on project scope and material availability. Simple updates like cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement might finish within a few weeks, while comprehensive renovations involving structural changes often extend beyond two months.

Planning stages add approximately four weeks before construction begins. Maintaining clear communication with your contractor and ordering materials early helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Common errors include insufficient clearance between opposing countertops, inadequate lighting that creates shadowy work areas, and poor storage planning that leaves countertops cluttered. Some homeowners select oversized appliances that overwhelm the space or invest in expensive features that don't address fundamental workflow issues.

Careful planning, accurate measurements, and consultation with experienced professionals help avoid these pitfalls and ensure your renovation successfully addresses your kitchen's specific challenges.

Whether expansion makes sense depends on your home's layout, your budget, and your long-term plans. Combining a galley kitchen with neighboring spaces creates more open, flexible layouts that many buyers prefer. However, removing walls involves substantial costs, particularly if they contain plumbing, electrical systems, or structural elements.

Sometimes, optimizing your existing galley layout through better storage solutions and lighting proves more cost-effective than expansion. Consult with a contractor to evaluate specific costs for your situation.

Effective galley kitchen lighting combines multiple sources to eliminate shadows and create visual spaciousness. Overhead fixtures provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates work surfaces directly. Consider recessed ceiling fixtures that don't protrude into limited headspace.

Lighting with dimming capabilities allows adjustment for different activities. Reflective surfaces like glass tile backsplashes or glossy cabinet finishes help bounce light throughout the space, reducing the corridor effect common in galley layouts.
