"Vic Johnson and his crew were great from the start to finish of our kitchen remodel: quality work, great communication, helpful in problem solving. All subcontractors and vendors provided quality work and products. Cost was fair and competitive. Will definitely call on them for future projects."

"When we viewed the damage to our kitchen floor, walls, and cabinets from leaky pipes under the sink, our hearts sank. How could we handle such a large project? Because we are in our late 80’s, we called our sons about the matter and one of them said he’d call Angie’s List because he had gotten good help from you folks himself. The name Eric Vanderlip showed up on the screen as a highly rated contractor and he lived close to us. A quick call brought him out the following day. He told us because of COVID, getting materials and workers to do the work would be difficult, but that he was willing to take on the job. So began the restoration of our kitchen. We noticed Eric going out of his way at every turn to make it as easy as possible for us. Often he brought samples for us to check out, so we wouldn’t need to shop and perhaps expose ourselves to the COVID virus. How good it is to see our kitchen back in place, looking even better than before. We recommend Eric Vanderlip highly to our friends and family. In fact, we have Eric returning this summer for another job. Thank you, Angie’s List for providing good workers for a much needed service."

"We ended up not going with Classic Remodeling but would use them again to provide any further project estimates. Classis was very responsive in providing our initial bid and a pleasure to work with. Classic provided a very thorough bid proposal and was always willing to follow up with any questions we may have. It was amazing to us how many contractors were unresponsive or slow in providing bids for our project. This was not the case with Classic and responsiveness rates very high in our opinion."

"Thrilled! That’s how I describe the outcome of the home remodel we recently completed with Johnson Custom Builders. The overall remodel took just over 4 months and included completely renovating the kitchen, dining room, living room, and family room. We started the project over 2 years ago with another custom design firm and spent 18 strenuous months trying to finalize the design. Having gone through the design process we knew the original firm was not who we wanted to work with during the next phase of the project, so we started interviewing custom builders. After talking to several we came across Ryan Johnson, owner and operator of Johnson Custom Builders. He immediately stood out from others by being clear, concise, thorough, and detail oriented. We did our due diligence by checking references and reviewing past projects to confirm Johnson Custom Builders was our choice. The last thing we wanted to do was repeat the painful experience we endured with the original firm. As expected, we had to wait to get the project started. Pre-COVID, no quality builder had immediate availability. All were booked several months out, and Johnson Home Builders was no exception. Fortunately for us, Ryan used that time to become intimately familiar with our design and bring several new ideas to the table that allowed us to overcome the shortcomings we had accepted in the original design. We were pleasantly surprised by Ryan’s design skills. Even though he specializes as a builder, he brought several excellent ideas to the table that utilized practicality while meeting our demand for a modern/rustic PNW look. Never did he push us to simply make a decision so he could stay on track. Throughout the process he guided us by providing options, trade-offs, and setting realistic expectations while allowing us time to digest the information and select what we wanted based on budget and functionality. Communication is paramount to the success of any project. This is no secret, but often diminishes over time and results in missed expectations and failed projects. Being a detailed person myself, the one thing I appreciated most about Ryan’s style and approach was his dedication to weekly, on-site, status meetings and written status reports. These two things eliminated the ambiguity of where we were at in the process, what decisions needed to be made by us as the homeowners, which decisions were final, and what to expect next. The notes were simple, concise, and proved to be extremely valuable throughout the project. The quality of the final product is a culmination of the skill, attention to detail, and quality of materials used to build it. We only influenced the materials with our budget. Ryan and his trades brought the skill and attention to detail to the project. Having closely monitored the quality throughout the project, we found very few issues and the few items we did find were handled immediately by Ryan and the team with no hesitation. Now that the project has completed and we were able to fully move back into our home, we couldn’t be happier. The end result is stunning! The quality of work that Ryan and his skilled team of trades produced is amazing. Friends and family that have seen our new home are amazed at the transformation. It’s clear that Ryan and the Johnson Custom Builders Team takes pride in what they do. I highly recommend JHB to anyone who is looking for a quality, reputable builder that will listen, guide and deliver the home of your dreams."

"I would recommend him and he is 5-star all the way. After our dishwasher leaked and ruin our floor, we had hired another a contractor to remodel our kitchen but found that he did not want to do because to him it was too small of a job. So, I found GASHIN EMPIRE LLC on Angie. He came out and looked at it and said that he would do it. He is very open, honest, he gave me a clear schedule and he was able to accommodate our needs. After waiting 4 months for our kitchen to get done he did it in 4 weeks. It is beautiful and all our guests just love what he has done. I would absolutely hire him again in the future."

FAQs for kitchen remodel projects in Preston, WA

Your galley kitchen needs adequate clearance around any island installation to maintain functionality. Most galley kitchens lack sufficient width for traditional islands, as these layouts prioritize efficiency in smaller spaces.

If your kitchen has an unusual width, consult with a kitchen designer who can evaluate your specific dimensions and recommend appropriate solutions. For narrower spaces, consider alternatives like rolling carts or narrow work tables that provide additional surface area without permanently restricting movement.

Kitchen remodels require six to 10 weeks for completion, though timelines vary based on project scope and material availability. Simple updates like cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement might finish within a few weeks, while comprehensive renovations involving structural changes often extend beyond two months.

Planning stages add approximately four weeks before construction begins. Maintaining clear communication with your contractor and ordering materials early helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Common errors include insufficient clearance between opposing countertops, inadequate lighting that creates shadowy work areas, and poor storage planning that leaves countertops cluttered. Some homeowners select oversized appliances that overwhelm the space or invest in expensive features that don't address fundamental workflow issues.

Careful planning, accurate measurements, and consultation with experienced professionals help avoid these pitfalls and ensure your renovation successfully addresses your kitchen's specific challenges.

Whether expansion makes sense depends on your home's layout, your budget, and your long-term plans. Combining a galley kitchen with neighboring spaces creates more open, flexible layouts that many buyers prefer. However, removing walls involves substantial costs, particularly if they contain plumbing, electrical systems, or structural elements.

Sometimes, optimizing your existing galley layout through better storage solutions and lighting proves more cost-effective than expansion. Consult with a contractor to evaluate specific costs for your situation.

Effective galley kitchen lighting combines multiple sources to eliminate shadows and create visual spaciousness. Overhead fixtures provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates work surfaces directly. Consider recessed ceiling fixtures that don't protrude into limited headspace.

Lighting with dimming capabilities allows adjustment for different activities. Reflective surfaces like glass tile backsplashes or glossy cabinet finishes help bounce light throughout the space, reducing the corridor effect common in galley layouts.
