Small jobs welcome

DAM Concrete is a new company, built off of 10+ years in the trade. I started with my families company in Toledo, OH and then I joined Local 886 as an apprentice and in 4 years I became a Foreman. I decided to move down the Columbus 3 years ago working as a supervisor for a company. I've been on all sorts of projects from residential driveways and stamped patios, to commercial warehouses and apartment building to just name a few. I've always had the goal to own my own company one day, and I'm starting to live that dream.

"Our paver patio was set on a poorly installed, damaged concrete foundation that was in place before we owned our home. Chris and his crew meticulously restored the concrete and reused all of our pavers which were still in good shape. Their attention to detail and work ethic was so impressive, not to mention their manners and pleasant dispositions. They arrived early in the morning and worked until late afternoon. We are absolutely thrilled with the result and would hire them again without hesitation. I highly recommend them!"

"Paul came to assess a problem with water soaking the carpet in a portion of our finished basement. Paul helped figure out the problem is likely related to plumbing as opposed to a foundation issue. A plumber came the next day and Paul was right - a copper pipe was leaking from the ceiling and had to be replaced. I appreciate Paul spending some time helping to assess the problem. If I ever do have a foundation issue (a pray I don't), Paul will the be first one I call."

"They gave us a very competitive bit. They are a very reputable company. They shy away from the newest trends. They follow tried and true things. They are not a company that is going to fall easily in to some new product to push on their customers. They were able to easily cover our porch with no problem. They were very comfortable and confident. They have a very specific process for steps that they use. They have a giant piece of concrete and then cover them with your material. They don't offer services they are not experts in. The downside is there are some things they are leery with doing some things they are not familiar with. They are a little low on the creativity side. You will get something that is solid and made to last. They didn't really follow a plan that I had drawn up by another company. I don't think we would have had that issue if they were following their own plan. I think they are an outstanding company.Their quality and workmanship is awesome. They know how to lay a patio that is going to last you. You won't have sink holes or problems. If you want a job to been done well then they are a great company. They are very nice. They are not pushy at all. hey are competitive. They don't have very good ideas that are aesthetically pleasing."

"Our house sits on a sloped lot bordering some woods.  At the bottom of the slope are two drains which empty into the yard; they make a 90 degree turn and end flush with the grass.  All the ground water and any gutter overflow affects these two drains, and as such, there is a very large area in the low part of our yard that is always boggy.  We planted a weeping willow there in the hope it would absorb some of this wetness but it did nothing for it. <br /> We had Andy come out and see what would be involved with tying the two drains together and running them out to a new drain (which would call for some trench digging) that would be emptied in the creek that runs through a ravine in our front yard. <br /> Andy was very honest in saying he didn't think any kind of underground drain would work, primarily because we have a few shallow-rooted trees right where the drain would need to go -- a weeping willow and two river birches.  He explained that trees with those root systems would destroy any underground drainwork within a few years; i.e., it would be a waste of our money.  Even if we did go along with having it done, he felt that any digging would damage the trees because he could not avoid cutting into some roots. <br /> He did give me an estimate of @ $800-$900, far below what I was expecting -- yet he told me several times why an underground drain wouldn't work and how it'd basically be a waste of money.  He then went on to give me some landscaping ideas, such as having the low-lying area re-graded, and recommended an excavating company he works with.  He also thought that perhaps a landscaper could come out and create a dry creek to pull the water out of the yard and into the existing creek. <br /> We haven't decided yet what we're going to do, but we do know that because of Andy's recommendation, we won't be doing any underground drainage to try to fix the problem. <br /> Even though they did not end up doing any work for us, I would absolutely use them if I needed to because of Andy's honesty.  I have rarely heard of someone trying to discourage a project that would make them some money regardless of whether or not it was the right thing for the homeowner to do.  He was very upfront, very knowledgeable about the subject matter, and recommended alternatives that would mean profit for someone else.  He could have easily said, "Oh, yeah, this is what we'll do...." and we'd wind up with a destroyed new drain and possibly some dead trees, and he'd have been long gone.  You just don't find that many companies with that level of integrity. <br />"

"Tim and his father did a great job replacing a couple squares of sidewalk at our home that were done improperly by a different contractor. They got me an estimate and fit me in their schedule quickly, all while doing the work the right way at a fair cost. I would definitely ask them to do additional work in the future and recommend them if you need concrete or masonry work as well. They are also licensed in Columbus and insured. Before hiring any vendor to do work at your home, I highly recommend you verify both of those things. I came across a number of other concrete vendors who did not have either or both of those documents and some were less than forthcoming about it."

"I have some level of disappointment because Acculevel was unable to lift the patio back to its original position. That being said, I think the challenges they encountered would have been encountered by anyone else, and some of the other one-man mudjacking operations who wanted to use buckets or wheelbarrows to carry slurry back to my patio probably would have given up earlier. I chose Acculevel because they use foam instead of slurry (which should last much longer), they had a 300 foot hose solving problems with access to the backyard (I live on a steep slope with retaining walls), and I had more confidence selecting them compared to independent one-man operations who do mudjacking. Their price wasn't the highest bid I received but it wasn't the lowest. I thought it was fair given the foam is a higher quality product. The crew actually arrived an hour early, which actually wasn't ideal but not a big deal (a call would have been nice). They worked hard and I suspect they were there much longer than they had originally envisioned. They did a nice job sealing all cracks when they were done with a high-quality crack filler which most of the mudjacking guys told me they don't do. The good crack filler can be messy and difficult to work with so this was a nice little bonus. Although they couldn't get the patio back to where it was, they worked hard to do the best they could without risking damage to the retaining wall. At least with the foam they use, I have confidence it won't sink anymore."

"I spoke to Max and Mike on the phone before deciding to go with Midwest Masonry.  I drew a sketch of what I wanted and Mike came to the house to take measurements.  He emailed a quote, which was very reasonable. We negotiated a little on the final design and price before the contract was finalized.  <br />      They scheduled a day, which had to be adjusted around the weather.  They arrived when they said they would, removed weeds, leveled and prepared the site, then laid the sidewalks and patios.  There were 3 places where they made 1-2 steps to adjust to different levels.  The concrete was broom-finished and the color was in the material, not just a surface stain. They put in expansion joints and sealed it.  <br />      The workers were all very professional and friendly.  They knew what they were doing, worked quickly, and got the job done despite having to work around the weather.   <br />      Mike worked with me to select small blocks for a ledge to direct water runoff.  The blocks weren't the size needed, so he cut them in half to fit and made a very attractive curving border on one patio.  All the walks and patios were slanted correctly to direct water away from the house foundation.  After discussing it with me, they laid down small pebbles in a space between the sidewalk and fence so weeds wouldn't grow there.  That really made the job look cleanly finished.  <br />      After the work was completed, I phoned to ask how to trim a rough edge and Max said he'd do it.  He came out the next day and trimmed it.  <br />      I highly recommend Midwest Masonry.  They worked with me throughout the project and were flexible in making adjustments.  For example, the color I selected wasn't made anymore so Mike found a comparable coloring agent elsewhere. They were fast at answering phone calls and very friendly.  I would use Midwest Masonry again without hesitation.  I wish every company was as reliable, high quality, and professional as they are.  It was really a good experience.  These guys are great and do beautiful work! <br /> <br />"

"Bryan and his crew did 2 different jobs for us. The first was to demo an old concrete garage pad and block retaining wall in the backyard. They also pulled several wood fence posts and graded the whole yard. This spring they came back and excavated the front to widen our driveway and poured new steps, a sidewalk, and the driveway with concrete. We are extremely happy with Big B Concrete - Bryan was great to work with throughout the whole project and brought a lot of good ideas to the table. Many other contractors balked at the size and scope of our project but Bryan was game from day 1. I was impressed with the excavation and demo work they did, but I am absolutely blown away with the concrete work. Everything looks incredible and very high quality. I would recommend Big B to anyone."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Prospect, OH

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
