"I was quoted for smoke remediation services. I discussed the process with the estimator and the steps that we need to take to clean the space. the workers were punctual and professional. Unfortunately, when the final bill arrived it was $1500 more than we agreed to and their explanation was that they left some services off the quote that they performed. This should have been explained before the started the new services. It is completely unacceptable to charge this much extra money without first consulting with the homeowner"

"<p>I think I found them on Angie's List. They have been fantastic during our home renovation process. I keep putting them on hold, but I have built a relationship with them and they have been so patient and good throughout the whole thing. They have come out multiple times to help me with our previous contractor and current contractor for the remodeling. They have been great. They came out, met with my new contractor and it cost me nothing. They have been in constant contact with me regarding the status. They prepared for the states when I asked them to be ready to do the asbestos abatement. That was a part of the first stage of my remodeling project. Their pricing has been very reasonable. They did an assessment not just of the cost for the work, which they revised based on what the insurance company had told them to change. They have engaged with the insurance company, they have engaged with my remodelers and have come out without even charging us. The work that we have paid them for was just one time testing. This was the second test versus the first test we had. They do asbestos testing and asbestos removal.    </p>"

"Excellent. All communications were good. Ms. Kleinhammer was very responsive. She took the time to clearly indicate the situation with respect to lead testing for my unit. She was early to our appointed time to inspect the unit. She was professional in her work and provided all the information that I needed to complete the registration of the unit with MDE. I will use this company again if I have a need for other environmental testing. <br />"

"Jack was terrific. He listened to our issues, asked appropriate questions, offered pricing options depending on need, and came out to the house the same day to conduct tests. Explained everything clearly and was incredibly professional. Highly recommend."

"We have been working with Pete to measure the lead levels in our house. The abatement process has been very complicated which is why we have asked him to come several times to inspect after our other contractors cleaned. He is easily available by phone, nice, and prompt. Both he and Sheila, in his office, are lovely. I like them both and would recommend them as honest people to work with. <br />"

"I found D and D Environmental Contractors (DDEC) on ServiceMagic since Angie's list is a little sparse in this area. I was contacted promptly and we scheduled an appointment for the estimate. On the day of the estimate, Santos and Juan arrived on time. Santos explained the process thoroughly and took measurements while Juan took before pictures. I liked that both Santos and Juan were completely engaged in the discussing all the details of the process. It was obvious that these guys had actually done the work before and were not merely salesmen. I received their estimate and licensing information later that day. I also received a follow-up call from Santos the next day to see if I received the estimate and if I had any more questions. Wow. Their prices for the tile removal was competive and the price for the mastic removal was half of what another company quoted me. I was able to schedule the removal within a couple of days with the balance to be paid on completion. <br /> <br /> On the day of the removal the three men arrived early and were ready to start work. Again, I was pleased to see that Juan (from the day of the estimate) was part of the removal team. The men were extremely professional and had great personalities. They appeared happy to be there and that this wasn't just another job of pulling up grungy carpet and old crusty tile. The team removed all of the carpet and padding and hauled it away. They set up all of their gear before the tile removal and had all of the windows, doors, vents, and fireplace protected with plastic sheeting. Once appropriately suited up, they removed the tile very efficiently. The remaining black mastic was sprayed with a sealant. After the abatement inspector okayed the asbestos levels present in the work area and outside the work area, they removed the plastic sheeting, packed up their gear, and took after pictures. They answered the remainder of my questions before they left. The next day, Juan sent me the report from the abatement inspector and the before/after pictures. <br /> <br /> These guys were really great! From the estimate to the post-removal follow-up they were top notch. They worked efficiently and safely for a reasonable price. I am very grateful that I chose DDEC over the and quot;bestand quot; two on Angie's List."

FAQs for toxic lead testing projects in Reston, VA

If your home was built before 1978, there’s a strong chance it contains lead-based paint. Many pre-1980 houses also contain lead in their plumbing and decorative materials, so age alone is a significant red flag. Older homes near industrial areas face an even higher risk. Because you can’t confirm lead by sight, scheduling a test is the safest way to protect your family.

In older houses, lead can lurk in painted trim, window sashes, soil around the foundation, plumbing pipes, and even vintage hardware. The metal is toxic, and children and pregnant women are most at risk. Exposure can trigger developmental delays, learning problems, and organ damage. Because the EPA links even low levels to serious health effects, test every suspected surface and address any hazards right away.

A positive test means lead is present somewhere you can touch, breathe, or disturb. The next step is a full risk assessment to map exactly where the hazard lies and outline the safest fix: encapsulation, enclosure, or full removal. Repairs start at $1,000 but can exceed $10,000 for complete elimination, so act quickly and hire certified pros to keep your family safe.

EPA lead certification proves that inspectors, risk assessors, and abatement contractors follow federal safety rules under the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. The credential costs an average of $300, and certified professionals can legally test, contain, or remove lead hazards. Hiring a certified pro protects you from fines and ensures the work meets strict health standards.

Lead-based paint looks no different from any other paint, so you can’t identify it by color or sheen. Even flawless walls may hide it. If paint starts chipping, flaking, or peeling, schedule a professional test right away. Only laboratory-grade testing confirms lead and guides the safest fix for your home.
