"They did a fantastic job.  Showed up on time, their back office team is very responsive by phone and email.  Completely professional.   Great price.  I hadn't calculated the square footage correctly so there was some confusion and I needed to buy more sod in the same day but they handled it perfectly and were very fair to me and got the whole thing done in one day.
I was concerned that a contractor would be lazy about regrading and removing the rocks and debris but they were not - they spent a lot of time getting the ground perfectly graded in advance of putting down the sod.  They didn't leave any dirt or mess - no trace.
They also followed-up with detailed emails and links on exactly how to care for my lawn moving forward - much appreciated.
Very impressed.  I've used a lot of contractors in the last 2 years and only a few of them were very good - these guys are great.  I highly recommend them.

Delaware River Jack stone filling in bare dirt areas. Forming a stone bed.
In this project, we transformed a bare dirt area by using Blue Ice stone in the corner. Along the patio border, we added Delaware River Jack to seamlessly connect the entire stone bed around the pool.

"From the initial estimate request to the final installation, we had a fantastic experience with MC Fence! Communication, workmanship and quality of materials was stellar! Jarrod, our MC Fence contact, was professional & quick to respond to any questions we had. The installation crew installed our nearly 400 linear foot fence in a day like a well-oiled machine! In addition, the office staff was friendly & efficient. We couldn’t have asked for a more positive experience with MC Fence! We would highly recommend them!"

"Hugo arrived at my house 10 minutes early and looked at each job to be done prior to starting. He unclogged the toilet in no time and went on to the door lock. He took care of that job promptly and installed the tv on the wall mount. He did all the work so quickly and efficiently and completed everything within a few hours, even though the deal was for 3 hours. I would definitely recommend Hugo from HandyMan at Your Command. He was great and feel confident that he can tackle any job you need to have done!"

"They removed two 22 year old Cherry Blossom trees and ground both stumps for $800 (($900 with 100 off coupon from Angies List).  They also ground a stump each for two neighbors while they were there for $100 each.  Later I gave them another job to lay sod for 400 square feet for $500 an my neighbors got sod too.  For both jobs (tree removal and sod laying) they worked fast - each done in a day while I was at work and they left the yard and sidewalks clean when done.

"Yard By Yard Makeovers did a wonderful job. They arrived on time about 8am, did everything that we needed done, and were finished by 3pm. And this was no mean feat. The porcelaineberry's roots run deep since it's invasive. The mint was everywhere in one area, as was the pokeberry in another. And poison ivy is, well, poison ivy. They dug everything up and disposed of it. They pruned our crape myrtle and dug out the "weed tree." They transplanted two types of plants from one bed to another. They put down grass seed in two now empty areas. And they created two beautiful new plant beds, fertilized and mulched. They also helped me pick out which new perennials would be the most appropriate for planting, keeping in mind the sunlight that would be available and that we wanted to stick with natives or native hybrids. We are so excited about our new plant beds, as are our neighbors, who no longer have to look at two overgrown messes. We can't wait to watch over the coming years as the plants grow and flourish! We now have the best looking plant beds on the block."

FAQs for sod installation projects in Round Hill, VA

Seeding costs less up front, but you’ll wait months—and sometimes a full season—for the grass to fill in. Sod costs more per square foot, yet it gives you an instant, usable lawn the day it’s installed and needs far less care during the first year.

If speed and early curb appeal matter, the higher sod price is often worth it; if you’re watching every dollar and don’t mind the wait, seed can still be a smart play.

Start by sketching your lawn and breaking it into rectangles or circles. Measure each section, multiply length by width, and then add all the sections together for the total square footage. Standard sod rolls are two feet by 1.5 feet, and one pallet covers 450 square feet.

Divide your total area by 450 to see how many pallets you need, then round up—extras come in handy for cutting around curves or mistakes. Still unsure? A local sod supplier or installer can confirm your math before you order.

Most sod grips the soil within 10 to 14 days. During that stretch, keep foot traffic to a minimum and mow only if the grass gets tall. After two weeks, the roots should be strong enough for light use, but wait six weeks before heavy play or frequent mowing. Giving the grass that short honeymoon helps it anchor firmly and sets the stage for a durable, healthy lawn.

Give your new lawn two full weeks before any foot traffic, then stick to light use only. Hold off on vigorous play, parties, or regular mowing until the six-week mark so the roots can dig deep. Keep watering on schedule and watch for any dry patches. A little patience now means stronger turf and fewer repairs later.

Keep an eye on color, moisture, and even growth. Fresh sod should stay uniformly green; brown spots or gaps hint at dry soil or poor contact. Water deeply at least once a day for the first week (more in hot weather) and back off gradually after the roots take. Avoid heavy foot traffic until the grass feels firmly anchored. Quick attention to trouble spots now prevents costly patches later.

Aim for spring or early fall when daytime temps hover between 55°F and 80°F. Mild weather and consistent moisture help the roots knit quickly. Laying sod in midsummer can stress the grass, while frozen winter soil blocks rooting altogether.

If you must install outside the ideal window, budget extra time for watering and tending to the turf. Choosing the right season makes the job easier and the lawn tougher.
