"Our solid oak front door was faded and weathered. Joe from Browder Painting in San Luis Obispo, painstakingly stripped and hand sanded the old varnish off of the door, conditioned the wood, stained the door with a lovely cherry wood finish, and applied two coats of satin varnish to protect the finish. Joe was an outstanding workman. He was extremely courteous, always arrived on time, and cheerfully answered all of my questions. All of the staff and crew from Browder have been exceptional. I would highly recommend Browder Painting."

"After checking out bids from several cabinet makers and contractors, we were so lucky to be introduced by our brother to the team at Fernando's Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Montebello. From start to finish, our experience with Armando Jr. & Armando Sr., Fernando, Antonio and all of the other guys was excellent. These guys are friendly, professional, respectful, careful, and creative. They take great pride in their work and it shows. For approximately half the price of the bids from the big name cabinet companies, we were able to get the kitchen of our dreams! Our drawers and cabinets have soft close hardware; a custom breakfast nook was built to our specifications; our pantries and space under the kitchen sink have beautiful roll outs making everything accessible; we have a custom trash drawer, a custom spice drawer, custom dish drawers, etc. When it was clear that I, the homeowner, had miscalculated on a couple of items (i.e. breakfast nook measurement too shallow), the team made adjustments in a timely fashion to our satisfaction. We have an all white kitchen with stainless steel appliances and we chose to have Fernando's not only build the cabinets, but also paint and install them. This proved to be a very smart step, as the paint finish is top notch and any adjustments that had to be made during installation due to uneven walls and ceiling were all taken care of by this team. After the counters and appliances were installed the guys came back to make sure everything fit tightly and seal any gaps. Armando and his team made our kitchen remodel experience a huge success and we recommend them highly! <br />"

"The cabinet maker came to our home and measured our kitchen. He drew up computer drawings so we could make changes and additions. He used excellent wood and a beautiful stain finish. When the cabinets were done he installed them on the date and time he said he would be there. Gave professionalism a whole new meaning. They turned out beyond what we <br /> expected. <br />"

"Angel was responsive to my inquiry by email. Came out for an estimate to install stock cabinets, counter top and sink as well as all the plumbing. The day he was scheduled to come to install he called me to explain he had made a mistake on his estimate and wanted to talk with me first because he said he would not just come to do the work then tell me, this was for $20.00! that impressed me a lot. He was so careful of my home protecting the area he worked in he did a quality job! He was efficient an organized."

"I recently visited the showroom of Payless Kitchen and Bath in Glendale, CA with a friend. The woman at the front desk was kind and professional. It was great to see the different cabinet, countertop, and backsplash options that they have available, especially because they were displayed like real kitchens, not just small samples. I was surprised to see flooring options in each of the mock kitchens as well as some carpet samples for the other rooms in my house. As for bathroom ideas, they had full size examples of showers as well which made it easy to envision in my house. If anyone is looking to make updates in their home, make an appointment to see Payless Kitchen and Bath in Glendale or have them come to you. "

"After my insurance company remediated the mold damage resulting from widespread flooding by stripping almost everything out from the floor to mid level, I decided to cash in and redo the place. It took from early March to late May to work out the contract during which time Sally Walker, the technical partner, patiently worked with me offering suggestions and pointing out potential problems with the seemingly endless choices I had to make. Their showroom was a useful resource yet Ivone Cortez, the coordinating partner, was happy to incorporate items I chose from the wide selection available on the web. A good illustration of their flexibility was the effort needed to incorporate non-magnetic cupboard door latches. It took more effort on their part to work out how to install these latches as there were subtle and unforeseen glitches but because of their patience, their handyman, Alfredo, with some ingenuity on his part, installed them perfectly. <br /> I'm no interior decorator so I benefited from the suggestions of Ivone and Susie. For example, originally, the walls, doors, and trim of my unit was a shade of white which I wanted to duplicate. Ivone suggested that the doors and trim be pure white so as to stand out. The effect really works. <br /> I asked Ivone to send a copy of the contract and proposal to my lawyer which she was happy to do. My lawyer gave high praise for the completeness of the proposal as well as the professionalism of the contract. <br /> The work began in early June and the contract work was finished by late August when I was able to move back in and have my life return to normal. It was a long time to suffer through but the length of the job was consistent with the estimates from the other contractors for whome I got bids, the insurance company contractor and my lawyer. Moreover, Alfredo often worked on weekends to get the job finished in a timely manor. Things slowed down afterwards when it came to completing some of the change orders as well as making last-minute repairs, but as I had already moved back in to an essentially fully functional home, it just gave me an excuse to delay the final payment—November 07. <br /> You may recall in my last review of Classic Installation that my one complaint was that Alfredo installed a door pull off center and I should've complained about it when I finally noticed it but didn't. I finally mentioned it during this job and Ivone volunteered to replace the door at no charge. Moreover, during this job, Alfredo's measurements were all accurate. I guess a few years on-the-job experience makes all the difference. <br /> Alfredo worked hard to please as best illustrated with the noisy microwave hood. I called Samsung whose rep said the noise must come from something foreign hitting the fan. Alfredo had already determined such was not the case. Still, To be thorough, he uninstalled the microwave hood and together we determined that the vent was obstructing the damper and the air resistance caused the motor to rev, making the noise. So much for Samsung customer help. Alfredo took the vent assembly back to the shop and fixed the problem. <br /> There were a few glitches. Classic Installation installs Waypoint cabinets which are modular rather than custom. I was disappointed that that the cabinets didn't make full use of the kitchen space. I don't know enough about cabinetry to know if this problem is intrinsic to modular cabinetry or whether it's possible to customize the size of the cabinets and drawers while still keeping the doors and drawer faces modular so as to save on cost, but if so, that's what I'd have wanted. The tile are not uniformly level and the grout doesn't completely fill the space up to the level of the tile making the floor a bit h****** a sponge mop since the porcelain tile edges are not rounded. Alfredo claimed that such is the case when installing sharp-edged tile. I've since noticed more carefully other tile work and what I've seen seems to confirm Alfredo's claim. I wished that either Ivone or Susie had educated me about this aspect of tile work. I would've chosen different tile. Finally, I ordered a replacement full-sized rectangular mirror for the vanity to replace a sloppily cut mirror of the same dimension. The new, precisely cut mirror once installed was not parallel to the vanity back splash. The mirror was fine; it was the original vanity that was cockeyed. Had someone accurately measured the vanity so we knew in advance that it was not true, I'd have ordered an elliptical mirror to avoid the problem. As it was, I paid to have the vanity surface redone. <br /> Any job as comprehensive as this one is going to have some problems yet given the scale of this project, I'm pleased with both the planning and execution of the job and most important I'm pleased with the outcome. Next time I need work done, I'll turn first to Classic Installation. <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for cabinets reface projects in Santa Ynez, CA

Absolutely. Refacing returns 65% to 80% of your investment at resale, and you get an updated kitchen right now. Because you’re not paying for new boxes or demo work, the price lands well below complete replacement but still delivers a fresh, custom look that buyers—and you—notice every time you walk in.

To trim costs, start by pricing a high-quality paint or gel stain instead of full refacing—stain alone can be one-third the price of full refacing. Keep existing hinges and pulls if they’re in good shape, and shop sales for sandpaper, primer, and sealer. The sweat equity is real, but so are the savings, and a careful DIY job can still leave your cabinets looking sharp for years to come.

A professional crew needs only three to five days to reface a standard kitchen, although a larger layout or intricate door style may add one to two days. Compare that with the several weeks a full cabinet swap can drag on. In other words, you get your space back fast, often before the paint on the new doors is even fully cured.

Yes, you can replace just the cabinet doors and drawer fronts without covering the cabinet boxes. Cabinet refacing involves installing new doors and drawer fronts while applying veneers to existing cabinet boxes. If you’re satisfied with the condition of your cabinets, swapping doors and drawer fronts reduces labor and materials, saving you time and cost. Always consult a professional to confirm compatibility and ensure a seamless, high-quality finish.

Most cabinet refacing projects do not require removing countertops because professionals can access doors and drawers around existing surfaces. However, if your countertop overhang prevents full access to the cabinet boxes, contractors may need to lift the countertop to install veneers properly temporarily. Discuss this with your refacing specialist during the on-site estimate so you know exactly what the project entails.
