"I would like to leave a fair review about my experience with Schwartz Builders. A neighbor recommended me to Craig back in July of last year to build a 50x50 shop. Craig seemed like a nice guy, and everyone said he was honest. We got started on construction right away. However, after receiving a significant deposit, he was hard to get ahold of and it was rare to see people working. I was lucky if I saw someone once a week. In all fairness there were material shortages, something beyond his control. It eventually did get built, about 2 months behind schedule and 3% over the firm fixed price we agreed on (I did make changes through the process so much of that was my doing). He asked for final payment before finishing all the required items, and I gave it to him as a sign of good faith. Unfortunately, he didnâ t really finish everything he was supposed to and I ended up paying this spring for dirt work (he said he would fix the ramp in the spring that didnâ t get done right in the fall, but didnâ t respond to messages) as well as other items. I also never received a single invoice. I guess he has a new bookkeeper now who claims that they donâ t have a single invoice for the past year of construction and claims heâ s not making any money, asking me to pay more to fix work he already charged me for. I will also note that they didnâ t clean up any construction debris at all and I spent days picking up trash bags full of nails and other stuff. Overall I was a bit disappointed in the process. As for the quality of his workmanship and the fact that he for the most part finished and within 2 months and 2%, Iâ ll give them that. But communication, finishing all the items they said they would, and overall management of the business; that area could use some significant improvement. Iâ m hoping they are able to turn the business around. Iâ ve heard Craig used to be the best, but heâ s been struggling for the past year or so for a variety of different reasons and many people I know have said that itâ s gone downhill."

"They have contacted me for a quote but I have not yet heard back from them. I am leaning toward contacting a friend to assist me in building it myself as I am concerned that I will not be getting the custom project that I need. If they surprize me and are able to come back with a quote for the project we need, I will most likely hire them for the job."

FAQs for shed, barn or playhouse building service projects in Soldotna, AK

Most sheds larger than six feet by eight feet require a foundation to remain level and dry. A compact tool shed might get by without one, but anything heavier should sit on at least a 4-inch-thick stone-and-gravel pad that extends two feet past the walls. The gravel protects wood skids and promotes drainage. If you want maximum stability—and your budget allows—a poured concrete slab is the strongest option.

Your ideal shed size hinges on purpose. A common 10-by-12-foot kit gives you 120 square feet—plenty for lawn tools and bikes. Need just a spot for a mower and a few rakes? A compact 4-by-7-foot model should work. If you’re envisioning a workshop or hobby room, look at 12-by-16 feet or larger.

A good rule is to raise the shed floor four to six inches above the surrounding soil. That clearance encourages water to drain away instead of pooling beneath the structure. The simple step is especially important for wood floors and skids, helping deter rot, mold, and insect damage while extending the life of your new outbuilding.

Choose the route that fits your goals. Prefab sheds arrive in standard layouts and go up fast—perfect for basic storage on a tight timeline. Custom builds cost more and take longer, but let you add windows, wiring, plumbing, and unique finishes. Balance budget, features, and timeframe before deciding which type of shed is best for your needs.
