"After a terrible experience trying to work with a large box store, I turned to a local company and I learned a big lesson about quality. First, Essex Paint and Carpet has great hours. I was able to call them in the morning before I went to work because they open at 7:00 AM. I appreciated this as I can't always make calls from work. I also was able to get an appointment for the next Saturday morning for an estimate. I worked with Liz the whole time from the estimate to arranging the install to the payment. Liz spent an hour and a half with me to help me pick the right choice carpet at the right price point. She also helped me find a really nice, high quality remnant vinyl for the entryway. This looked great and helped save some costs. Our home is a custom contemporary with lots of nooks and crannies and small odd shaped closets. The installer was such a seasoned professional and was able to finish off everything very nicely, even the oddly shaped rounded steps. In the end, it was the best service, install, and for almost the same price as a big box store we got top of the line quality carpet in a color that I just love. I was so relieved that I didn't have to settle for something I would see in my home every day. I am very, very happy with Essex Paint and Carpet and look forward to going back to them for future projects!
"

"Don has an awesome team of guys. Each one of them were total gentleman and they know what they are doing. They worked extremely hard and diligently, and our flooring installation was beautifully done. They were mostly on time and they worked their tails off to finish the job in the time they had available. That said, I did have some things I wish went a bit differently. Here are some details about our experience--both pros and minor cons.
1. Don kindly checked out our wood ahead of time and cautioned us about not getting quite the top quality product we thought we were. This was very much appreciated and something I felt was high integrity. We then knew what we were getting and he problem-solved how to install it most durably and effectively.
2. Don also advised us not to get the insulation padding beneath the hardwood floors, as he said it really made no noticeable difference to the sound of walking on the floors. We were happy to listen and save the $3,000. Unfortunately, our floors are now so loud--you can hear every single step of anyone, anywhere in the house--upstairs or down. Not yet sure how to rectify this. And maybe this really wouldn't have been any different had we used the padding. I have no way of checking at this point. But I'm thinking it couldn't have hurt and kind of wishing I'd spent the extra $3k after all.
3. Don was very fair on negotiating price with us. He was also flexible on the dates and squeezed us in when our closing date for our new house shifted. This was very appreciated. The challenge was that they were only able to give us 4 days on a job Don defined as 5. But he said he wanted the job and promised they'd get the floors done on time. And they did. It was hard work and happened on a VERY hot week at the end of the summer--when we had not yet installed A/C. So, I fully understood their desire to be done with our house. Working in that heat was miserable for all of us. That said, I'm still a customer that wants to be treated with politeness and respect for the money I'm paying them. And on the last day, Don lost my future business when he left with his team at 3pm when the finishing work was not fully complete. While the floors were done (and beautifully so), most of the doors (some 20-odd of them) were NOT re-hung and some of the trim was not put back on. As they had begun to clean up, I mentioned this to Don who responded with something to the effect of: "Well, your doors suck and I've already had one guy working on them all day when that wasn't even in my quote." (If doors are not in my quote, then shouldn't that have been discussed with me prior to the project beginning?) He then implied that I should be grateful he even got out job done in 4 days at all since it was really a 5 day project. Being that it was only 3pm, and they hadn't come until 9 or 10am that morning, I found it hard to believe that the other 4 men couldn't have helped the one guy who'd been assigned to the doors and finished all of them before end of day to *fully* complete the job. Thus, despite all the good work prior, this choice combined with Don's dismissive and righteous attitude about *his* responsibility on the subject really disappointed me. And, just to be clear, the pieces of uninstalled trim WERE included in the quote.
4. There was one 8x8 area that we'd put in the quote for the flooring (which is tallied by square footage) which we eventually decided to leave bare to be tiled in the future. Interestingly, Don never gave me a refund for this area. It would have amounted to a few hundred dollars. Granted I didn't ask for it. I guess I didn't feel I should have had to ask, and after the way I was treated over the doors on the last day, I didn't really even want to talk with Don again.
5. My advice for home owners looking to get floors installed: Just be really clear about what you are paying for and what you aren't. There are a LOT of factors involved in getting floors installed. For example, in addition to the above issues, I had talked with Don specifically about re-doing the two sets of carpeted stairs with new hardwood treads, and I assumed it was built into the quote, but it wasn't. It was an oversight on both of our parts given that I'd asked for it and he hadn't included it--and I'd mistakenly assumed it was in there without being specifically delineated or confirming it. When he and his team came, it was a shock to me that the stairs wouldn't be done. He apologized for the mis-communication and explained he didn't have time to squeeze them in either during that week. So, just be super crystal clear on all questions. And remember to ensure the reinstallation of doors AND trim are covered as well as disposal of old flooring and clean-up.
6. Overall, I would recommend Don and his team, because they are all very good at what they do. Good contractors can be hard to find, and these guys really are skilled. Hopefully, Don was just having a grumpy day and his behavior wasn't typical. Unfortunately, it lost my business permanently.
"

"I needed a piece of heavy duty carpet for an area rug for my sewing room and called Elegant Floors as they had installed beautiful wool carpet in our bedrooms last Fall and the experience had been very positive. When we stopped in the store, Michelle remembered us and was very helpful in choosing an appropriate product, explaining the differences in carpets and what would be a good selection for my use. The one we chose was in stock so they bound it and delivered it the next day - Sean even helped to move the furniture and roll it out. Great service and wonderful to work with.
"

"This was the most money we have ever paid anyone to do anything...ever. The Sheridans had our trust throughout the entire process. They gave an affordable quote and did awesome work. They cleaned up during each stage of the project and always communicated well with me about timing and issues that came up. Our garage dimensions were awkward and not a perfect rectangle by any means - these guys had to craft a kit of workarounds for irregular shapes and curves. Todd and Luke are good human beings with positive attitudes, and care about their integrity and their work. I hope to use them in the future."

"Reviewed numerous windows prior to purchasing. The "Vista" brand window purchased from Bonnette's arrived in perfect shape and exactly as ordered. Very high quality window which cost more than others but it has made a big difference in saving heat. No drafts at all. 1 1/2 yrs later still looks and functions as new. Bonnettes were very good to deal with, explained exactly all options on the window, and quoted detailed pricing. I installed it myself.

"

FAQs for carpet installation projects in South Burlington, VT

Carpet rolls come in standard widths of 12 and 15 feet. Less commonly, you might find a roll 13.5 feet wide. There are no standard roll lengths, but they’ll have enough to cover almost any home.

You’ll need equal amounts of carpet padding and carpet. Carpet padding costs $200 to $500 for the average room. However, the padding is trimmed a couple of inches away from the wall on all sides to make room for tack strips. Most residential installs have padding, and professionals include this in their bids.

Often, the best carpet for basements doesn’t include a pad. You’ll find this mainly in humid areas or places with a high-water table.

One linear foot of carpet or other material is simply one foot measured in a straight line. You typically aren’t going to measure carpet this way. It’s quoted in square feet or square yards.

There are nine square feet in one square yard of carpet.

The amount of carpet you need to cover two rooms varies depending on the room size and configuration. Measure the floor space. Multiply width times length. Do this for both rooms and add the numbers together.

You’ll need between 80 and 110 square feet for 13 stairs. For unique stairwells, you might need more.

Measure indoor/outdoor carpet like you would any other area, taking the width times the length. For patios, make sure to add a couple extra inches to wrap around the edges. Indoor-outdoor carpets cost an average of $3.50 per square foot.

You’ll need enough carpet to cover the entire area of damage to avoid seams. For example, if you have a 4-inch tear in the middle of a hallway, you’ll want enough carpet to stretch from door to door or the next available seam. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you might be able to get a professional to do an invisible seam repair.

One square foot of carpet is one foot long by one foot wide.
