"By far one of the top three best decisions we made for this house! They took our 1970’s railing and brought it current. They did meticulous, beautiful work and it has truly changed the entire look of the house. Through every step of the way, the customer service has been outstanding and Nelly is on top of everything! Stairs and rails are truly a master craft and they are masters!"

"Wilber's is excellent and went above and beyond what we contracted the company to do. Got three quotes from different vendors and Wilber's had the most competitive pricing. The job manager, Eric, was excellent at communicating about the work and steps needed to complete the job. Wilber's even helped to order the doors that they needed to install from a local vendor they recommended. You could not ask for more in terms of craftsmanship, communication, and consideration. For example, the workers even returned after the job to clean up an inconsiderate bird that treated my newly painted white house like a personal toilet. I would recommend the company to anyone in NJ looking to do work on their home."

"We completely redid our bathroom which included changing the layout, a very complex redo of plumbing lines, new concrete bathroom floor and installation of everything new and shiny. Dave was able to turn around this scary project into a wonderfully crafted beautiful looking bathroom. He is a very super detail oriented passionate artist. The project also included demo and installation of new tiles for the passage outside the bathroom and a new sliding barn door. Unlike other contractors, we had complete freedom in selecting the materials. Dave helped us throughout this tedious process via video calls and texts. Dave also had brilliant ideas and always gave us varying cost effective options for even the tiniest details. He was very transparent and patient with us. Thanks Dave and modern home improvements for this wonderful experience."

"Basement floor and walls, garage walls, one room, four closets, hallway and foyer were painted. Carpet was removed from a room, hallway and stairs. The wood floors under the carpet were sanded, sealed and two coats of poly were applied. The crew was professional, punctual and polite and the quality of their work was excellent."

"I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome of this project and with hiring Ateba for the job. Right from the outset, I had a great feeling that I had selected the right person for the project. I left a message for Ateba and he responded in less than a day. In our initial discussion, I shared with Ateba the kind of playset I wanted to create and that I needed him primarily to cut the wood and drill the holes I would need. From just that conversation, I could tell he was an expert at his craft. I had every intention of assemblying the playset myself but I soon learned that I would need the assistance of someone like Ateba if the project was going to be a success. Turns out he not only did the necessary cuts to the wood with expert precision (some more complex than others) and drilled the holes (both through holes and countersink holes), but he also helped me assemble the playet and level it for safety. About the only thing he did not do was stain the wood - I did that myself before he came to start the project. I was highly impressed with the professional manner in which he approached his craft (carpentry) and the knowledge that he brought to the table. Ateba was always very punctual and showed a bias for going above and beyond in every way. He wasn't willing to settle for "just ok" and so we made the adjustments to ensure that the playset would be one that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will one day play on. I could not have done something like this on my own despite believing I would at the outset. Ateba is the real deal. Having worked closely with him for a number of days, I can tell you that he has a great attitude and is determined to deliver on your goals. He's also a very fair and genuine person that isn't out to scam you. His personality is such that you'll want to go grab a beer with him. If you have any carpentry needs, I can assure you that you'll get more than your money is worth with Ribba Wood Working."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Stirling, NJ

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
