"Mr. Jim Gorman who is the owner of the business called me back within a half hour of my email posting. He visited my home 3 days later, inspected things, and told me what the approximate cost would be. He and his helper then installed an entire lightning protection system on both my house and a back garage/storage area. He did things exactly as I wanted in every way. Also threw in a free weathervane which increased the beauty of my home. I would have no objection to recommending this gentleman and his company to anyone who is in need of a competently installed lightning protection system for their home/property. MID-AMERICA LIGHTNING RODS is one fine company run by a man who cares about doing good work according to the latest safety codes etc. Having lost my previous retirement home to lightning, it was very important to me to get this job done and quickly because the thunderstorm season is upon us and with the climate change, those storms are very wicked, especially here out in the country where i live!"

"<p>Somehow my laptop corrupted the operating system and would not even boot up. Alexander Technical Resources (Spencer) came to my house to try to repair my computer. We decided that my computer needed to go to their repair facility for some serious work. They were able to save all my data, ran thorough diagnostics and repaired my computer. It was such a relief that I did not loose and data.</p> <p>This is the second time I have used them. The first was to set up this very laptop and transfer all the data from my old PC.</p> <p>I would recommend Alexander Technical Resources and will use them for any other computer repairs. </p> <p><br /></p> <br /> <br /> <br />"

"The MB Heating & Cooling crew did a fantastic job. The process was completely professional, non-pressure sales, with good explanations of everything on the front end. They were always prompt, clean, and prepared. We replaced our existing furnace and thought the cost was very competitive. We had scheduled our installation for a few days prior, and were asked to delay the installation as another customer had a no-heat situation. We were glad to agree to reschedule and think that this shows to their customer service focus that they would ask and tend to the higher priority installation. <br /> I had a quote from a competitor for similar grade installation and feel that the price was very competitive. All costs the same, I would have hired them based on the professionalism and customer oriented that was displayed in the contact and review process.  <br /> The installation crew did a very good job, left the job site clean and made a nice, tight, professional looking installation. I've had things installed before with other contractors where the goal was to Git'R'Done. This was not the case here. M&B worked diligently to get the job done and made sure all my questions were answered. Overall, as a natural gas professional who is concerned with proper and safe furnace installations, I would <em>highly</em> recommend MB Heating and Cooling for your furnace replacement. <br />"

"The person that represented Ruby Electric was very cold and condescending. He quoted several prices, and I opted to do some work myself in order to cut costs. When the time came for the installation of my hot tub, I thought it somewhat strange that we should go through the yard instead of installing the box on the outside of the house and running the electric in the basement. When I called the representative back he said that yes it could be done quite simply and without extra conduit and special cabling for underground installation. The service man came out and he was very agreeable and very professional, and also when asked he stated that it should be less of a price because they're using non underground cable and no conduit. When the bill came there was no adjustment I contacted them stating with the installation person indicated, I was immediately called back by the installation person stating why I have gotten him in so much trouble so I contacted the main office the main office was very short and unpleasant with me. When I requested to speak to the owner, he was not pleased to deal with me. I informed them that unless they were a bit more professional and considerate of the fact that they used less materials that first quoted and that they should adjust the price accordingly and if not, I would seek another electrical company to install the whole house generator they summarily dismissed me. Overall slightly pricey and unprofessional, and I would state that you keep a close eye on the costs of what they're charging you."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Stonington, IL

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
