"Met with contractor who provided me a great price and was able to get the work done when he said he would. Crew came out for work and did a great job in building me my grill patio. When I looked to get more work done, I knew exactly who I would be hiring for the job and had them come back out for a new estimate for a new walkway. Can't wait to see how the new walkway turns out."

"The job started early April 19, 2019 and continued all day. The rough surfaced concrete needed to be ground smooth with a diamond tooled walk behind grinder. A number of surface cracks had to be opened, filled with polyurea patch, and ground smooth. This phase took half the day. An epoxy base coat was rolled on. Colored poly flakes were immediately broadcast over the wet epoxy. After this first coating dried, a sun proof polyaspartic topcoat was applied. Nothing was damaged and all materials were properly disposed. Job Price - $1600."

"I personally watched the men during the entire process. After erecting scaffolding and cutting away and removing the old crown, they built & installed a large and robust wooden frame, mixed 16 ninety lb bags of cement, poured in the concrete and were finished in an astonishing 5 hours! They came back later the next day, removed the wooden framed and scaffolding, and the result was a perfectly cured concrete crown. Awesome job. And the job site and rooftop was left spotless when the men left."

"We had an overgrown backyard deck space that needed a lot of help. We had a number of contractors come and speak with us about concrete and paver patios, but Todd at Cal & Shan's was the most thorough. He listened to what we wanted and put together a free 3D virtual layout. My husband is a very visual person and this is just what he needed. We talked about may options once the layout was done and when the initial quote came in way over our budget Todd was very willing to work with us and figure out things we could change to get us down to the budget we wanted to work in. When work started I had many questions on a daily basis that the crew was very willing to answer. The work was done in a timely manner and the Unilock pavers look amazing. We now have a very inviting open backyard that we can't wait to spend time in!"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Sycamore, IL

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
