"Excellent service!! I was referred to Able Electrical Services by a contractor who refers all of his customers to Able. They were very responsive and prompt and were able to accommodate me the same day. Karen called to let me know Chris would be coming and I received a text that he was on his way, so I had time to leave my office and meet him. Chris came out to my condo and explained everything as he went along. I was using a space heater plugged into an outlet which was causing the wires to overheat and fray and causing intermittent electrical outages. He fixed the issue which was a potentially dangerous situation that was avoided thanks to Able's fast and very knowledgeable service. Karen, Doug and Chris were fantastic and I will recommend their services to friends and family."

"Time Kyle electric sent an extremely proficient technician to my house. Justin and the other technician (sorry I can't recall his name) where professional, friendly and best of all fixed my electrical issues so I can have lighting in my bathrooms and hallway. They explained to me what needed to be done and were able to reroute the wiring for success. I am extremely happy and the technicians are awesome."

"The estimate and scheduling was a breeze with Todd. The crew arrived on time to install 8 recessed lights, in 2 rooms, as well as wire 3 ceiling fans in the bedrooms that did not have overhead lighting. They completed the job quickly and efficiently. There was no mess left (they put down plastic and vacuumed up anything that made it onto the floor) and they covered all holes they had to make. I will definitely use them for future electrical needs."

"We had a complex residential job involving replacing an antique breaker panel (and auxiliary switch boxes installed over the decades) and also upgrading the supply drop and meter and shutoff boxes. Mark provided a quick and reasonable estimate, and got the work going quickly. Along with being personable, Mark and his people are professional. The quality of the work is first rate, as was his coordination with the local utility and county inspectors. A first rate experience all around, and a good value for the money. I would not hesitate to hire him again."

"Lou gave me the lowest bid for upgrading the electrical panel and outside connection, plus fixing a number of irregularities, GFCI, open grounds, lack of a separate circuit for the washer and gas dryer. He did the work in a workmanship manner. I highly recommend him."

"How did it go? Not well. I finally just bought the required ladder at 200 USD and did not pursue Kolb Electric further. I should have just bought the ladder in the first place. Live and learn."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Sykesville, MD

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
