"I am extremely satisfied with the work they do. I am a real estate agent so having a great "handyman" is very important to me. I have referred them to work on two of my clients' homes what were being fixed up to be sold or rented. They are very handy and have done drywall work, cabinetry, hung doors, fixed ceilings, added doors, put down a subfloor, replaced and repaired toilets, hung ceiling fans, painted the inside and outside of the homes plus so much more! I have also had them do work for my Dad and one of my personal friends. I would surely not use them as a real estate agent or refer them to my family if they were not the BEST! They are also two of the sweetest and most genuine people. You can't help be really like them. They are very honest and have a great work ethic. I would highly recommend Sean and Erin for any of your handyman needs and beyond for sure!"

"Let me start off by saying that I was "That Guy" that needed a miracle. We have been remodeling our house and have done a lot of projects ourselves. We were in the middle of this project when all of a sudden my wife finds a house and we put money down. Our timeline was very short. We had 2 days to get our house ready. J&D Woodwork were 3 of 18 (and I am not exaggerating ) companies that even called me back. 1 was very slow to respond to me, and one wouldn't answer calls (would only text. Very unprofessional) David and his team were in one day and started the very next day. He was booked out, but was able to move some things around, and knock out the project. They say you cant have a good price, quality work, and fast all at the same time. These guys proved that to be wrong. I got all of it! In our new home we will be putting in pergola and will be using J&D Woodwork. We will refer them out to everyone that we can. I promise, you will not regret hiring these guys! I can't say it enough!"

"Wilfrido installed built-in cabinets and shelving in our newly remodeled kitsch pantry. He did a fantastic job. His workmanship is clearly shown in his product. No wood filler or caulk was used in construction, just time and careful cuts."

Customers say: Quick response

"Ryan and his team exceeded my expectations, very well organized, clean and affordable. His carpentry skills are impressive and are shown through the quality of his work. I started off just needing some small repairs and carpentry work, which lead to replacing windows, adding patio doors, an outdoor kitchen, fire pit and lastly a wooden bar. I definitely recommend him without a doubt."

Customers say: True professional

"Dennis did a fabulous job of replacing the base of my kitchen sink cabinet. He was prompt, professional and his work was very reasonably priced. He actually made it look better than when I purchased the house 4 years ago. The former owner had a leak, and the base had warped a bit. Unfortunately, another leak occurred a month or so ago and the base had to be replaced. He matched the base to the existing interior wood sides of the cabinet; it looks brand new. Great job! Will use this company in the future."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in The Woodlands, TX

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
