The most important part of our estimating process is that there is no pressure to buy. We’ll give you our best price, answer all your questions, and let you sleep on it. This is the only way we do it. APCO is a family business that opened its doors in 1962 in a barn along the Scioto River. What sets APCO apart from other home improvement companies is that APCO, now one of the largest home improvement companies in Ohio, is a wholesale distributor. That means lower prices for our customers from a very experienced staff.
"We hired APCO to remove and replace a wood deck with a larger composite one. We signed up for an estimate after seeing them at the home and garden show. They promptly followed up by phone and made an appointment to come out to see our needs. They did this and promptly followed up with a quote followed by taking detailed measurements and drawing up plans. We liked the plans and found the price acceptable so we hired them without getting any other quotes. They estimated about six weeks before they would start. We heard from them roughly after the six weeks and told us a crew would come out and get started. First they took out the old deck and then dug holes and put in footers for the new. They got the framing done for the new deck and we found that the crew had left some items on the ground such as several flagstones. These items were apparently under the old deck and we were surprised they didn't move them before framing. My wife and I got those out from under the frame. Once they started putting the decking on we began to notice some quality issues. What surprised us was that the issues were obvious and the crew did not seem concerned enough with them to get it right. First we noticed that they had miscut a decking board about a third of the way across, yet they put that board into the deck. A couple of other badly scratched boards were also installed. The deck includes a single step from the house down to the deck and then two steps from the deck to the ground. My wife and I immediately noticed, with the naked eye, that all three steps were not level. While most of the screws in this deck are hidden, there are a few places where screws needed to be visible. This includes the surface of the steps. On one of the steps there was no attempt made to line the screws up so they at least would look neat. They were put in haphazardly and frankly looked like a ten year old had put them in. All of the above items we corrected after we brought them to the attention of the manager. A couple of the items took a second call back to get satisfactorily resolved. Generally we were disappointed in the crew's lack of pride in making sure the deck looked professionally finished. Also surprised that supervision of the crew wasn't tighter. The crew was good about cleaning up their scrap and disposing of it in the dumpster APCO provided for it. The crew was not a good about making sure we ended up with a clean finished deck. During the course of construction, they tracked mud onto the deck. The manager eventually noticed and had them power wash it. They got the worse of the mud off, but we still ended up needed to power wash it ourselves once they were done to get it completely cleaned off. A couple of things that we are just living with: First, when the gentleman came out to measure and get the plans started, he told us they would build some type of enclosure around the sump pump pipe that exits the house and would be visible above the deck. This made perfect sense as it would be needed to give the deck a nice finished look which is what we expected from APCO. Unfortunately, we failed to notice that this did not make it into the plans and APCO did not honor that commitment. Rather they said that isn't something they normally do and the gentleman should not have promised it. They suggested we figure out a way to hide it. With it not being in the plans, and the gentleman having left the company, we ended up figuring out a way to hide it. Secondly, the new deck is slightly lower than the old one it replaced. The result of this is that a 'scar line' is visible on the walls of the house where the old deck surface met it. Most contractors we have used in the past have had enough pride in making sure their work looked great that they would have found a way to hide that with some type of molding (even if they would have to charge for it). Not APCO. Currently the scar is still visible and we will probably hire another firm to help us with that. In conclusion, while the crew sometimes showed up a day after we were told, APCO generally did this project on schedule. With a couple of exceptions mentioned above, we have a nice looking deck that seems to be solidly built. We just felt that for a project in this price range a little more care and pride could have gone into the project to get a more professional looking final product. Also if you do contract with APCO, make sure every detail you agree to is spelled out in the paperwork or plans. They will not honor anything said but not in writing."

Build decks Patios Concrete work Small excavation Install driveway culverts Installation of sanitary sewer and waterline Your satisfaction is very important to us, and we won’t leave until the job is done right. We pride ourselves on the quality work we provide, while delivering great customer service!
"Will was very nice to start off with. He came willingly and gave us an estimate, as well as picked up our $2,600 cash deposit. Once the deposit was paid our level of responsiveness changed and we were always "next on the list." Will never did build our deck because he under bid the job and decided it wasn't worth his while. Where we are at today (one year later) - a police report is being filed today. Any theft over $1,000 is a felony in the State of Ohio and we just want our deposit back. Good luck to Will with where this is headed. - Heather E."

You should clean your deck before sealing it. Cleaning before refinishing is critical. If you don’t remove dirt and debris, you'll trap moisture in the wood, which prevents the new sealer from working correctly and can lead to costly repairs. Whether you need to sand, power wash, or sandblast depends on your deck's condition.
Sealing and staining your deck are essential maintenance methods that protect and beautify your outdoor space. Stain adds rich color and guards against fading, while sealant fortifies the wood against moisture and weather damage. Wood type, climate, deck age, and the degree of existing damage determine whether your deck benefits from one or both treatments. Using both options extends your deck’s durability and enhances its overall appearance.
Power washing and sealing your deck costs $500 to $1,700. This process combines the removal of stubborn dirt and debris with a protective seal that preserves the wood’s integrity. Effective cleaning eliminates harmful buildup, and a proper seal prevents moisture damage and wood decay, ensuring long-term durability and reducing future repair expenses.
Your deck must be sealed every one to three years to maintain its strength and appearance. Regular sealing is essential to protect the wood against moisture, mold, and harmful UV rays. A consistent sealing schedule prevents rapid deterioration and costly repairs. Inspections should be performed annually to determine if the protective layer remains intact, extending the life of your deck.
Leaving your deck untreated compromises its structural integrity and safety. An unprotected deck rots quickly due to moisture and environmental exposure, which means that neglecting sealing results in rapid decay and expensive replacement costs of $4,125 to $11,650. Sealing your deck is essential for maintaining its durability and protecting your home.
The sealant on your deck dries within a few hours and reaches full cure within 72 hours before regular use. It is essential to wait until the complete curing period to ensure the protective layer fully sets and resists weather and foot traffic. Proper drying guarantees that your deck is fully protected against moisture and environmental damage, ensuring lasting quality.
