"I recently purchased a foreclosure which tested with elevated levels of Radon during the home inspection. There were some companies that offered significantly less expensive solutions, but not impressed as their bids provided no information and would have been out the basement and up the side of the home which does not look very nice. Midwest Radom came out and we found a route out the basement, through the garage up through unfinished attic space, and out the roof which allowed the exit pipe to come out the roof on the backside of the home. This was actually decided upon during the initial install when we discovered the original solution presented by the estimator was not workable. They were not going to put firestop collars because I live in MO and "that is not required by code" even though I had discussed it with the owner when I first called, because I had done my homework and learned they are important and asked for them. They were going to charge more, but ended up honoring their original offer which I appreciate and feel is reasonable for some 4" PVC pipe, 2 X 2 plastic sheet, 4" radon fan, vacuum gauge, 2 fire collars, and 1 roof penetration flashing with 3-4 hours of labor with 2 technicians. They had to do a penetration from the basement to the garage and from the garage to the attic space. They pulled from an existing outlet for power for the fan and a final penetration out the roof. It took 2 trips to complete the work because it was raining or snowing the first trip they made. They charged $1005.00 for the job and took less than 4 hours to complete. They also performed a follow-up test which showed a decrease in Radon levels in the safe range. I highly recommend Midwest Radon because their price was fair for a good job done to my expectations based on industry best practices which are higher than what the state of Missouri presently requires."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Ryan was great to work with and you can tell that he takes his job very seriously. He is definitely a professional in ever sense of the word. I thought his inspection was very detailed and thorough and his turn-around time in providing us a report was very quick. I would definitely recommend Essential Inspections for any home inspection that needs to be done. <br /> The total amount for the services was $450, which included the mechanical inspection ($325) and 48-hour radon test ($125). <br />"

We are Heartland Radon Solutions. We provide radon testing and mitigation services. We start by testing your or business to determine if you have elevated radon levels in the structure. The action level set by EPA is 4.0pCi/l. If the levels are above 4.0 then we install a mitigation system that siphons the radon gases out from underneath the slab or membrane. We strive for under 2.0pCi/l. Oftentimes, we can get the level under 1.0pCi/l. Mitigation systems were also found to help get rid of other contaminants along with the radon gases before they have a chance enter the living space. This helps improve the overall indoor air quality inside the structure.

"Our Prairie River Inspector arrived on-time and ready to inspect.  He explained the process that he was going use to complete the inspection and we got started.  He spent a lot of time on the exterior of the house and documented all findings (good or bad) with a camera and included all the pictures with written narrative explaining the finding (in plain English) in a report, more on that later.  The inspector was on the roof, under the deck, in window wells, etc.  To check for any heating inefficiencies (Ex: poor seals, gaps, etc.), the entire exterior of the home scanned with an infrared camera.  This was very valuable information since I am concerned about energy costs.   <br /> <br /> Once the exterior was inspected, he moved indoors and starting in the attic, thoroughly inspected for insulation levels/R-Value, proper roofing material installation, adequate ventilation, etc.  Again, documenting everything he found.   <br /> <br /> Next he proceeded to the basement and tested all our major appliances, basement walls, stairs, electrical service, pumps, egress functionality, etc.  He shared several maintenance tips and best practices that will be important to know maintaining the home in the future.  This also gave me an idea of the problems/costs/time that I could expect and all this played into the counter offer that I made.   <br /> <br /> Through out the house, the inspector tested every light switch, electrical outlet, plumbing fixture, drawer, cabinet, etc.  He was very thorough.   <br /> <br /> Finally, the inspector finished up by sending me a very detailed inspection report.  This was a valuable resource for the future because of all the appliance data (pictures of almost all appliance labels, tags, serial and model numbers).  I received the report very promptly which was important due to the tight timeline on closing.   <br />"

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Topeka, KS

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
