"Could not have asked for better more professional workmanship. Serge and Nick were always on time and worked from the moment that arrived to the moment they left. When the left the room was clean and Serge was good about explaining what had been done and what they would be doing the next day.The room looks fantastic; better than i ever would have expected. I will definitely hire them back again for our next remodeling project."

"I hired Hearth to Home to install crown molding, trim and baseboards in a conference room and office for my business. I explained what I was looking for, and Hearth to Home brought an incredible level of expertise, and skill to complete the job. The crew was polite, courteous, thorough in explaining the steps ahead, and incredibly clean. They left the site cleaner than they found it. Iâ ve been so impressed with the work that Hearth to Home did, Iâ m already starting to plan my next project to hire them for."

"TJ was very informative about what we needed to fix the problem. He went to get the parts and had to order one. He called promptly when the part was in and wasted no time getting back to make the fix. He was professional yet down to earth and easy to talk to. We are definitely keeping his number for the future!"

"RAM CONSTRUCTION does not do laminating flooring, only wood so he was unable to give an estimate . However, recommended another business who came to our home and will be giving us an estimate shortly. RAM Construction did not leave us hanging with no options, gave us the name of someone else. We found Rodney to be very professional with us. He will be giving us an estimate for gaps around our front door."

"The pro came to repair a leak in my parents roof, in the living room. We called and got the pro. He came and said he could repair the roof leak. He guaranteed the work. It still leaks and the part of the ceiling fell in about a week ago, after there was a lot of rain. My father is August Collacchi."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Utica, NY

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
