"Luis and his team were able to fix my front porch, which was starting to detach from the house. They were able to get to my job very quickly which helped give me even peace of mind. Very friendly and professional, they were able to get the repair done quickly and without any issues. To anyone on this site, I highly recommend them. I even got a few extra cards from Luis so I can give them to any of my friends and family that need work done as well. "

"Kelly from Handyman Matters was fantastic. He showed up right on time, walked through the tasks on hand, and seemed eager for the challenges some of the projects posed. In the seven hours he was at our house, he repaired one ceiling fan, removed and replaced two other ceiling fans, removed and replaced a bathroom fan, removed and replaced an outlet, repaired three other outlets, and repaired a gutter. Wow! We will definitely hire them again the next time we need a handy person. We'll be requesting Kelly too!"

"We initially hired Heath for window trim repair on three windows. By the end of the day, we had him replace siding pieces that needed to be repaired in addition to the original job. His attention to detail is amazing and seriously lacking in this day and age. He found other minor issues that required additional attention, ran for supplies, and willingly took them on. We have committed to using him for hanging a new front door and have asked him to give us a quote to paint our home. Hire Heath and you will not regret it."

"We needed to repair/rebuild our front deck. Prestige Construction and Home Remodeling were the only contractors who responded to our calls. Mike came out, took a look at our deck, identified a number of problems involving rotted deck boards, and gave us a quote. He and his crew showed up first thing in the morning and began tearing the deck apart. During this process they identified a number of other wood rot issues, increasing the amount of wood that needed to be replaced, and the cost. I do not fault Mike at all on the increased price, and he discussed every issue with me before he did anything. He also made it clear in his estimate that finding additional instances of wood rot would affect the cost, so the increase wasn't a surprise. Overall we are very happy with the work done. Every time they found a new problem, I was informed and they provided options to address the issue. I would recommend them to my friends and when it's time for me to do my next deck, Prestige will get my call."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I couldn’t be happier with the work done by Precision Painting and Construction. From start to finish, they were professional, reliable, and paid close attention to every detail. The painting turned out flawless — clean lines, perfect color matching, and the finish looks amazing. They also handled some construction repairs before painting, and the quality of the work was outstanding. Communication was clear throughout the entire project, and the crew always showed up on time and left the site spotless each day. It’s rare to find a company that takes such pride in their work and truly cares about customer satisfaction. If you’re looking for a trustworthy, skilled painting and construction contractor, I highly recommend Precision Painting and Construction. I’ll definitely be using them again for future projects! "

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Vancouver, WA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
