"Chad did an awesome job refurbishing our stairs and adding wainscoting! His attention to detail was greatly appreciated! He worked with us on the color of the stain and completed the job in a time efficient manner! I would definitely recommend him!!!"

"As in my first job with James at the end of 2015, I indicated what jobs I needed done and he supplied a detailed list of cost separating out material from labor. We arranged for a date, which he met. He came did the work, cleaned everything completely. His costs are very reasonable. He is professional in his bids, paperwork, workmanship and follow through. I would recommend James highly. I will definitely use him again. I have already recommended him to friends. Great job, very pleased. He does amazing carpentry work, he built the stair rails for me, and they are beautiful."

"It went very well.  The only thing that was an issue (and a very minor one at that) is that he was 15 minutes late with no phone call.  But his work was quality, so I tend to overlook that.  Every other time he has come out (for estimate, samples, etc) he has been punctual or called ahead to tell us he was running late.
I was very pleased with the work he did.  Our nursery looks fantastic now.  The ceiling looks great, and the fan is hung properly.  It looks very professional.  I know it was done correctly.  He talked me through every step of the process, and let me know what he was doing.  I now feel that the nursery is safe for our baby."

"It could not have been any better than we experienced. This was the first time in 26 years that the ceiling had been painted. Leo came and assessed the job that included repairs/additional prep work that we did not consider. He submitted a quote for cost and timing that was very reasonable and we accepted. He did as he said, repaired and prepped areas of concern. To me it was very obvious that he knew his business by the way he was organized and how he worked. Three different colors were applied and the crisp joint lines were perfect. He finished ahead of schedule. We were so pleased with the level of his work and professionalism that we have already accepted his quote for additional service. Extremely pleased."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Vandalia, OH

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
