"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Inspector (the individual) personally recommended by my realtor.  He arrived at the home a few minutes before the scheduled time and had already begun the outside survey when I arrived.  The inspection was very thorough and found several cosmetic items that both the agent and I had overlooked plus several electrical issues that would otherwise never would have been spotted (including inside the breaker panel which he opened).  Based on the professionalism exhibited by the inspector, I ordered a radon test (over a 3-4 day period) which did identify exposure at very slightly above the recommended limit (and which was remediated by the builder). <br /> <br /> Because of the electrical issues that turned up during the inspection, I scheduled a re-inspection to be performed after the builder had made corrections (I didn't feel qualified to judge those corrections).  Again, the inspector was on-site slightly before the scheduled time and completed the re-inspection in accordance with my expectations. <br /> <br /> At the time the inspection was scheduled, USInspect had provided a very detailed explanation of what the inspector would, and would not do, during his inspection.  Unlike some other reviewers, I was, therefore, able to anticipate just what to expect."

"The inspectors arrived on time and did a very thorough check of the home. I was impressed by all they uncovered. I would have never thought to check the items that the inspectors did down to the speed at which sinks drained and the temperature in the refrigerator. The inspection report was arranged by category and even included a summary at the end that identified the major problems. I don't know how any other home inspection company can stay in business, when they have to compete with A House on a Rock."

"The inspector was excellent, very thorough and professional.  He was fine with me following him all around the house and freely made lots of comments on everything he saw.  Very helpful to me in getting to know the house in addition to finding out if there were any red flags against purchasing it. <br /> The negative parts of our experience with Burgess were the incessant phone calls and follow-ups from them trying to get us to use their "free" network of providers of security, etc.  I tried to opt out of this and couldn't find a way to do it.  It was very pushy and I did not appreciate it.  I prefer to get my leads from Angie's List rather than from paid referrals from an aggregator like Burgess. <br />"

"Ray performed a very thorough home inspection.  He was punctual, professional, and very helpful.  He spent lots of time with us after he completed his inspection reviewing his findings and helping us to understand what was an important fix, what could wait, and what was a minor issue.  He took well over a hundred pictures of every part of the house and went through them with us in detail. <br /> Also, Jenn (who manages appointment scheduling) was very helpful and thorough on the phone.  She discussed radon testing with me, and, after our discussion, for various reasons she recommended against performing any testing at the time of inspection.  I really appreciated her honesty. <br /> I would definitely hire Capitol Home Inspection again. <br />"

"Super! Jeff Vance arrived as scheduled went under my crawl space, worked out an estimate, which was reasonable, and I hired him. He called a few days later to set up a time. The installers arrived as scheduled and went right to work. A few hours later they were finished. They even took pictures for me using my cell phone before and after so I could apply for a rebate from the gas Co. The installers were very professional, helpful with information and the pictures. Our floor is not as cold as before. I would definitely hire them again."

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Vcu-west, VA

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
