"We called Slabjackers for an estimate and they responded quickly and were early for the appointment! Chuck gave us options and recommendations with great explanations of the choices we had to fix our issue correctly. He gave us truthful information, even when it would certain choices would be less of a profit for him. <br /> The company arrived at the scheduled time and completed all work quicly and cleanly. They were very professional and the job site, when they were done, looked better than when they got there. <br />"

"I got multiple bids for this project. Not only was Absolute Concrete's bid one of the lowest, more importantly, I felt like I could trust Mike to perform the work and do it well. And he did. My new patio is beautiful! His work is top-notch, he was very easy to work with, he cleaned everything up and was all around a true professional. I'd use him again in a heartbeat and would highly recommend his services."

"Completed. I was told I should check with a heating and cooling business to make sure the fireplace was to code. It turned out that I should not use the fireplace. Floor of fireplace could crumble after a few fires! So glad I took the suggestion!"

"Working with Dave and his crew was an excellent experience. They provided top notch service and explanation of the process involved. Our garage floor had over 40 years of road salt and chemical from Illinois winters. The floor had a couple of large cracks and a significant area of pitting and wear from the limestone in the concrete being eaten away by the salt. The floor now looks like a masterpiece. We've already experienced a snow an the floor cleaned up wonderfully. I'd highly recommend Concrete Ink!!"

"<p>They did five main things I always look for.</p> <p>Work was very high quality , Justin might be the best young man I have ever seen run a Bobcat</p> <p>Work came in UNDER the estimate </p> <p>Work was done in a timely fashion   even in bad weather</p> <p>The workers were courteous, clean and very safety conscious about everything .</p> <p>The owner Tim came and made sure I was satisfied at the end of the work, walked the area with me,  shaked my hand and gave me his cell and told me he would be back by month end for the patio. He even volunteered to re roll the drive after it settles since he is coming back for the patio area,</p> <p><br></p>"

"<p>Stark Concrete is an outstanding cement contractor.</p> <p>A year ago I tried to get my driveway done with another contractor & after signing a contract, the contractor kept putting me off & wouldn't return my phone calls.  Finally, after several month I cancelled the contract.</p> <p>This year, I received 3 new bids for the driveway.  Stark Concrete was one of the 3.  From our first meeting I liked the owner, Jim Stark.  He is honest, and he show up when he says he is coming.  The first time I met with him my wife wasn't able to be at the meeting so he came back a second time and went over everything with her a** well.  She had the same feeling about him that I did.  We looked at all the bids & also reviewed Angie's List and BBB reports.  Overall, everything looked good.  There were some minor complaints but I spoke to Jim about them & he responded to my satisfaction.  When all the bids were in and reviewed we chose Stark Concrete even though their bid was not the least expensive.  We just felt, all things being equal, it would be worth a few more dollars to do business with Jim.  And, we were right.</p> <p>I explained to Jim what had happened the previous year and that I was a bit gun shy about being promised that a project would be done at a certain time & he reassured me that he would be at our home within 5 weeks of agreeing to the job unless weather impacted his projects that were currently in the queue.  So, we agreed to go forward with the project.</p> <p><br /> </p> <p>As it turned out, rain and weather did have some impact on when Jim could get to our job but, and this is important, he kept me informed by e-mail so I knew what was going on.  Also, I noticed that there was a $100 discount for Angie's List subscribers so I asked Jim about honoring that.  With no hesitation he deducted the $100 from my final bill.</p> <p>Jim arrived in week 6 or so after we agreed to do business with him.  And in 3 days of hard work in very hot and humid conditions he and his excellent crew had the job done!  I was very impressed with the level of professionalism I noted in every one of his crew members.  They were professional, proficient, detail oriented, and worked well together.  And the product was outstanding.  They found several problems along the way that could not have been anticipated before the old concrete was removed but, they kept me informed all along the way, briefed me on the options available, and then I was able to make informed choices regarding what I wanted done.  They could not have been any more professional.</p> <p>What can I say?  I found these guys in the yellow pages, but luckily, I followed my hunch and it turned out great.  If you want a concrete job done right, then for my money, there's no one else in the Springfield, IL area that I would want to work with other than Stark Concrete.</p>"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Virden, IL

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
