"We were recommended to Harvard Environmental by our realtor. We called them in a classic “first time homeowner DIY project panic” state of mind, and before even talking about scheduling a visit, they took some time to explain likely risks and soothe our nerves. A comprehensive inspection was performed and a similarly comprehensive report was delivered. Harvard Environmental then took time to explain each type of lead hazard present in our home, and helped us find a contractor to assist in the removal and remediation. Their attention to detail and responsiveness were very appreciated by two frazzled homeowners, and we very much recommend their services!"

"I hired Lars to perform lead remediation on a multi-unit building. His pricing was very fair and transparent. His work was professional and passed all inspections and was very easy to work with. I have subsequently hired him to complete various remodeling jobs."

"His name is Tommy. I've used them a lot. He has done work for me for the past three years. He is very good at what he does. He is a very nice person to work with and he is very reasonable. He is very good. He tries to get to me immediately if he can and he returns calls immediately. He will give me a fair estimate on what needs to be done and how we can do it the best way and the least involved way so the expense doesn't get horrendous. He hasn't billed me yet because he said that he knew that I still wanted him to do some additional work and he will bill me when that is done. He is going to be fixing some windows for me in an older house. He is knowledgeable. He doesn't do electrical or plumbing. He is also going to do my deck because it had rotted out. The service has been excellent. It has worked well and I've never had to be concerned about it again. I would feel comfortable with my own reputation in recommending him. I haven't had any complaints about anything. He is very responsive. I use him all the time. He will take the time and check with other people if he has any questions. He is very thorough and very fair."

Exterior painter for thirty years, now taking on more inside work. Mainly because there is generally less dust involved, which is better for my lungs. But come spring? Pretty good chance I'll tight up my mask and have at it again.

"Got two estimates, chose Baystate for its lower cost. Getting the estimate, setting up the appointment, finishing the work, and cleanup were all OK, not perfect, presenting small delays and problems that may not have been the company's fault. The work was done well as far as I can tell. The problem involved submitting a claim to the Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust, which will rebate up to half the cost of the work. One must submit evidence that the insulation that was removed was Zonolite, and fortunately, my home inspector had found a labeled Zonolite bag in the attic (first photo). But when I looked for the bag to file my claim, I discovered that the work crew from Baystate had thrown away my $4000+ bag! Got in touch with the company office right away; at first they were skeptical, but when they talked with the crew and found that that was indeed what had happened, they were much more eager to help. It took a few weeks, but they did return fragments of the bag, which they said they had recovered from the dumpster (second photo). I certainly appreciated that effort, but wouldn't you think that everyone in the company would be well aware of the importance of these claims for the consumer? My advice is to go with the well-known, slightly more expensive company whose estimate includes a thorough explanation of the rebate claim process."

"The project went very well. They were punctual and cleaned up after themselves. When they ripped the old roof off and found rotting plywood, replaced it. It's been almost two years now and not one problem with the roof.

I was very happy with the job and have hired Paul to work on another project for me, building a master suite, which I will report on under remodeling - general."

FAQs for toxic lead testing projects in Ware, MA

If your home was built before 1978, there’s a strong chance it contains lead-based paint. Many pre-1980 houses also contain lead in their plumbing and decorative materials, so age alone is a significant red flag. Older homes near industrial areas face an even higher risk. Because you can’t confirm lead by sight, scheduling a test is the safest way to protect your family.

In older houses, lead can lurk in painted trim, window sashes, soil around the foundation, plumbing pipes, and even vintage hardware. The metal is toxic, and children and pregnant women are most at risk. Exposure can trigger developmental delays, learning problems, and organ damage. Because the EPA links even low levels to serious health effects, test every suspected surface and address any hazards right away.

A positive test means lead is present somewhere you can touch, breathe, or disturb. The next step is a full risk assessment to map exactly where the hazard lies and outline the safest fix: encapsulation, enclosure, or full removal. Repairs start at $1,000 but can exceed $10,000 for complete elimination, so act quickly and hire certified pros to keep your family safe.

EPA lead certification proves that inspectors, risk assessors, and abatement contractors follow federal safety rules under the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. The credential costs an average of $300, and certified professionals can legally test, contain, or remove lead hazards. Hiring a certified pro protects you from fines and ensures the work meets strict health standards.

Lead-based paint looks no different from any other paint, so you can’t identify it by color or sheen. Even flawless walls may hide it. If paint starts chipping, flaking, or peeling, schedule a professional test right away. Only laboratory-grade testing confirms lead and guides the safest fix for your home.
