"David Gurwood has done various projects at our house over the last 25 years involving repair, remodeling (kitchen granite countertops), painting, electrical, plumbing, hardwood floors, windows, roofing, closets, masonry work, repair of our gazebo, replacement of our deck with composite construction. His work is excellent and he and his staff are very professional. All work and estimates are given in a written contract. David stays on top of the work making sure that the job is done right and on time. I would highly recommend David Alan Construction for any repair, remodeling or addition to the house."

Small jobs welcome

"I thought that this project was going to cost me a lot more than it did. I thought the ceiling would have to be completely replaced, he assured me it didn't and he repaired it instead. He did an excellent job."

"We purchased this home on a Friday and decided earlier that week that the hardwood floors needed to be refinished before we moved in the following week. Allen stepped up and offered to do the job over the weekend. The house is nearly 100 years old and it looked like a previous owner tried to refinish the floors themselves and it showed. The rooms also have baseboard heat so it made the job a little more tricky. Allen was hoping that he'd be able to get a smooth finish and in the end, the floor looked 1000% better. Allen truly did appear to love his job and in today's society, how many contractors would give up their weekend."

"We needed a new lower roof and once the winter weather broke we got put into the schedule and the work was done promptly. Took them only one day to rip off the roof, cut out three bad spots and replace with new plywood. Then re-shingle the roof and re-side one wall. It looks great and best of all no leaks. Everyone was very professional, provided us pictures of the damage they fixed and left the property as clean as they found it. Great experience!

"The best experience I've ever had with a contractor. The owner, Isaias Caceres, provided expert advice on how to complete our project. His workers were highly skilled and courteous, cleaning the worksite at the end of each day. Our finished basement has never looked better than it does now, as a result of this work. This is a company that I'll hire again in a heartbeat."

"It all went well. They are always accommodating. In middle of the project or at the end of project, if there was anything that I wanted to change, regardless of the reasons, he would re-do it or make changes accordingly until we are happy with the results. They are very skillful. One example, they came to the rescue of the bad quality decorative columns that we ordered from a Canadian company, elitetrimworks.com. The bad quality panels were thrown out by us and replaced with real wood panels crafted by them. The end result was fantastic. Very happy with the results."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Warminster, PA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
