"Ken, the owner of Humming  Bird Construction was very professional and friendly.  He did what he said he would when he would.  There was no hassle over getting the work started and completed in a very timely manner.  The crew that he had working for him were courteous and proficient.  The cleaned up after themselves very good.  No trash was left behind even in between work days.  They even took notice of a couple extra areas of siding and replaced those at supply cost only.

Before final payment Ken and I walked around the job area so that I could inspect things and make sure I was happy with the job before I gave final payment.  There were just a couple of areas noted to the garage door that required touch up and was seen by both of us and taken care of immediately by his crew member.

One thing I appreciated about Ken and his company was the fact that you always got a person when you called.  There was no answering service or machine.  The company is based out of Goddard KS and may be a smaller company but they do BIG work.  My job may not have been a big one, but they never made it feel any less important than perhaps a bigger job.  Their work looks great.  Ken helped me work with my insurance, but never asked me to sign something guaranteeing his company the work before submitting an estimate to me.  He made a point of making sure that his work and my house didn't look like a "patch job".

I would highly recommend  this company.

"They were prompt and completed the task of roof and gutter replacement on time and with seemingly high quality. One caveat ... only time will tell the ultimate quality of workmanship but all looks good thus far."

"My driveway always flooded with the rain. Home star installed a drain and a pipe which emptied the water into a ditch on my front lawn. They slanted the concrete so the water would drain. They also installed a patio . The craftsmanship was excellent! And there was not any sign of debris after the job. I will hire them again."

"Ours was a hail damage tear off and re roof on an almost 50 square roof of varying pitch of mostly less than 3/12. Almost flat. Other roofers looked at the roof and never came back. Mr. Michael, owner of Romani Construction, wanted the job and knew just how to handle all of the tricky places. He showed what I thought at first was salesmanship which turned out to be confidence about handling the job. He served in Afghanistan as a Marine which, for me, added to his credibility. Mr. Michael did sell our insurance company on upgrading our roof to a rolled roofing for the flatter areas. He insisted on following code, pulling a permit, and having the roof inspected: something that has not happened for this roof in, I would bet, decades. His crew was also first rate. He used men who work with him always. All were very respectful and friendly. Several confirmed that they had worked with the company for many years. And the lead man showed a lot of knowledge and experience also in explaining how the roofing would be done. The crew worked long and, incredibly, cheerfully through two of the hottest days of the summer. They picked up thoroughly each night and did not damage any flowers which was a big concern for us. They didn't blink when we asked Mr. Michael to have them insulate our old attic while they had the roof torn off, I suppose because they did indeed have lots of experience with their general contractor boss. We hired Romani, in part, because on a very small concrete job we tried him on, he showed a lot of care and concern. He drove across town very very late in the day to address a concern of mine. He and his crew showed the same care and commitment on our roof as well as on the the ceiling repair inside. Romani is a general contracting business. They'll be the ones we call first when we need a contractor."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Wichita, KS

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
