"The company quoted a good price for installing split rail fencing along a section of road frontage on our property, including the installation of two large diameter steel pipe gate posts for a gate that I intended to install at a later date. I made it clear that I wanted the posts buried deep in the ground and set in concrete to make them as sturdy as possible, and if he (Jeff Carr, the business owner) didn't feel comfortable doing this, I would do it myself. He agreed they would do it as requested. The business owner made it clear that they had a backlog and couldn't get to my job for several weeks, which was fine. They started the work when they said they would. When I got home from work on the day they set the posts, I noticed that the gate posts weren't buried very deep. I contacted the owner and told him about my concern. He said that they had buried the posts at least 30 inches deep. I knew that wasn't the case, because I knew how long the posts were, and how far they were sticking out of the ground. I removed one of the posts, took pictures of it, and emailed them to Mr. Carr. He said that they had run into a section of old driveway at about two feet down and couldn't go any deeper. I stated again that if they didn't feel comfortable taking care of this, I would do it myself. He said they would do it. They came a few days later to finish the rest of the fence, and when I got home from work, I found that only one of the posts had been dug deeper and replaced (the one I had removed). At this point, I just wanted to be done with it, so I paid the invoice and replaced the other post myself. When I dug the hole deeper, I did not run into a section of old driveway. Without disturbing the plantings around these arches, they were able to set the arches in concrete footings so that they would be more stable.
