"Excellent work by Jorge and his carpenter building a new stairway on our deck and redoing the posts on our front porch to level and strengthen it. They the most inexpensive option, but they more than delivered on what had been promised. Jorge was an excellent communicator, clear about scheduling and always appeared exactly when he'd promised to. I'm late in posting this review, but the benefit of being late is that I can add that six months later we are still very pleased with their work and I would recommend them highly."

"We have had Phelan Construction do numerous house improvements for us over the years. Most recently it involved wood gutter repair, wood steps, railing, hanging screen doors, soffit and fascia repair, and painting. Previously Bob replaced siding on a large area of our house with new cedar siding. We have always been more than happy with Bob's work ethic, quality of work and overall pleasantness."

"The crew did an excellent job. Work included removing decaying trim at rook line and replacing it with AZEK trim. This will out last me. The crew cleaned up all the debris and left the work area in good shape. David and his crew were excellent and easy to work with. I'll consider hiring them again when I need carpentry work done."

"When Gaby Sent me his work proposal by text message I found myself wondering whether he was reliable or legitimate. However, I hired him to replace my stairway railing because his reviews were so good. I'm very glad I did. This guy is a real pro. It is fascinating to watch him work. He is very quick but also very precise. Obviously knows what he is doing. His work was excellent. The price was certainly fair. I also added on for or five small jobs inside the house such as repairing doors, etc., and he added these onto the job without any hassle. It was a pleasure working with him. I certainly would hire him again and consider him a great resource for my future carpentry needs."

"Beto (Humberto Morais) Beto built a staircase and replaced and my home soffits. He explained the work he was doing and completed the work on the exact days he told me. He built the stairs very strong with excellent heavy duty wood. He also replaced all the roof soffits and made repairs as needed. I have already received complements on the work he has done and the looks of it. The price was very reasonable also. Beto was extremely polite, professional and pleasant working in his job. I will definitely hire him again. Marty Dunlavey"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Woburn, MA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
