"We had an excellent experience with Much Better Construction. The old external stairs and railings up to our back ADU badly needed both step resurfacing and rot damage repair all around, including entirely replacing a major support post. Isaac and his team were just great -- timely, easy to work with, the crew was super friendly, and the work quality was great. Very happy we found you!"

"My husband and I needed a contractor to reconstruct our front porch which was heavily damaged during the southern California fire in December 2017. We were incredibly lucky to have found Rick Moat and cannot praise his work highly enough. Not only is Rick a wonderfully talented artisan, but he possesses an incredible work ethic that seems to be in short supply these days. Rick had to reconstruct several porch pillars and railings between the posts all of which necessitated several painstaking assemblies of wood. There was also extensive prep work on our porch ceiling, the paint of which had blistered extensively from the heat of the fire. Rick worked tirelessly and painstakingly on each step of the project. He also did a wonderful job of fixing our upstairs porch. We are thrilled with the results of the restoration and cannot recommend Rick enough to potential customers who need detailed, expert work on their home. Rick is very pleasant to deal with and his fees are very competitive. We look forward to having Rick work on future projects for us in the future."

"Rogelio did an excellent job constructing a new set of garage steps and handrail for the home of my aging parents. The end product was attractive, sturdy and safe for their use. Rogelio is a polite and knowledgable craftsman. I found him easy to work with and responsive from beginning to end. I would definitely hire him again for other home improvement projects and recommend him to others."

"This was our second job with Mr. Mark Cullen, the first went so well we had him back in to install a new exterior door for us. As before, he was FANTASTIC, very personable and professional. He first came out and scoped the job, then at an arranged time he came back with the extra parts needed and spent the day installing the door. He had to deal with my wild security ideas and additions to the door, and he had to deal with electricians going in and out with a whole house rewire that was going on at the same time. Mark surprised them by speaking fluent Spanish with them. They were VERY impressed. We will definitely use Mark's services for any future work within his scope. In fact he will be coming back and installing a new window for us sometime soon."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Woodland Hills, CA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
