"Iâ ve worked with Tony many times over the years in a professional capacity as he has done installations on design projects for my company. I can attest to his skill and knowledge of the materials he uses as well as the various manufacturers requirements for installation. However, Iâ ve never personally reviewed his work and after my recent experience I felt that needed to change. After living in San Francisco during Covid my wife and I were done with the city weâ d called home for 11 years. In December we purchased a house in Yolo. The house was a ground up remodel of a 1930â s â mansionâ which had been completed just weeks before we put in our offer. The remodel had been worked on by various reputable contractors and companies, a few who I personally have dealt with in previous professional capacities so when our offer was accepted I was not at all concerned with the quality of the work which was done. One of the most attractive aspects of the home (at least to my wife) was the completely redesigned chefs kitchen which had Calcutta marble countertops and marble and tile backsplashes. The designer of the kitchen was refreshingly green oriented and did her best to repurpose whatever original features she could into the remodel. Cabinetry was added but some of the original cabinetry was also reused. The tile incorporated into the backsplashes had also been rescued from the original kitchen and reused in the new design, which added authenticity to its charm. After taking possession of the house and moving our stuff in, my wife noticed that some of the kitchen drawers directly under a section of countertop would not open. I tried to muscle them open but even I couldnâ t get them to budge. Further investigation revealed that the weight of the countertop was causing the cabinetry in that area to compress. (The cabinetry which was compromised included a section from the original kitchen as well as new cabinetry. What I assumed would be a simple call to have it repaired turned into a ridiculous game of pass the blame. The designer told me to call the general, the general hadnâ t done that part, he said to call another kitchen remodel company who had done that room, they said they hadnâ t installed the countertops because a decision hadnâ t been made at the time regarding the countertops, and so on. Some of these people I had a previous professional relationship with. After weeks of that b.s. and the cabinet doors under the affected drawers began to show signs of being affected my wife tracked down the company which had sold the countertop to the previous owner. She explained the situation and long story short because of the incorporation of the older cabinets which were not sturdy enough to carry its weight, neither they nor anyone would warranty the work.We would have to completely remove and replace them or find someone who could remove and repair the work. Finally it occurred to me to call Tony at James Custom Tile. Tony came out and and looked over the kitchen. Even he was not too optimistic about wether or not he would be able to save what was there, but he was upfront about this and about the various potential hazards of attempting to salvage the counters and tiles. Thankfully he agreed to at least try and while we werenâ t happy at this unexpected cost to repair the issue, it was little in comparison to the cost to replace the countertops at $180 a square foot or to lose out on the aspects we loved about the kitchen. We had to concede to a length of counter being cut into two sections. It took Tony approximately four days to carefully remove each tile and he removed and reinstalled the counters perfectly. We only lost one antique tile. James Custom Tile is the only company we will use going forward and the only one I will recommend to my clients."
