"An outstanding group of professionals, responsive, great listeners, and with a passion for excellence. As Dave, the owner, has told me more than once, "we're not cheap," and he's right, but having used another landscaper in the past with mediocre results, there's no question but that All Terrain consistently exceeds all expectations. I can't say enough good about the leadership team, Glen, Chris, and Gil. Hampered as are most landscapers in the area by the difficulty in finding quality help, they nonetheless dedicated three teams to completely transform our large backyard. They stripped everything out (and when I mentioned to Chris that I wanted to save a half dozen cacti, he immediately agreed and transplanted them to an area outside the fence. Then Gil and his band of magicians came in, sculpting the yard, putting in bricks in two circular areas outside the covered patio (they even brought in a surveyor to make sure it was built to have water run off into the desert behind us!), adding paving stones from the patio to the circular areas, and then adding incredible plants and boulders while rebuilding our irrigation system for the new plants. Somehow, Gil and his team finished in three days but never lost their attention to detail. When adding the paving stones, his worker continually used a level to make sure the stones were even with the patio and the brick circular area. When Gil replanted the cacti, he found the most wonderful areas for them. I had a number of aloes in pots, and they transplanted them into an aloe bed they'd designed under the picture window. No question, no extra cost. I could go on for ever. My wife and I are completely thrilled with the results; there's is ugly money you pour into a house and then there's good money. This was money well spent. The are absolutely our go-to company for landscaping."

"I never put a request in on Angies list for a deck to be done. I have never requested this service or spoke with company. I gave A rating and hire again yes because it would not be fair to company for work that was not asked for. Beware contractors and Angie list members."

"We were having our house painted to get it ready to sell. Al and his team did a terrific job: the house looks great, and we sold it in one day for more than the asking price. Beyond just the painting, Al made many suggestions about fixing or painting things we wouldn't have thought of, so that the house ended up looking pristine. As we identified several new things to do or to fix, Al took care of them and did not add to the price. Speaking of price, Al's bid was the lowest; others were as much as double his price. Don't let his low price fool you -- Al truly does great work and is great to work with. We were very fortunate that we chose him."

"terrific! I should have written this review months ago), just catching up. Carter's crew did a serious clean up in our enclosed back yard and pool area (we had hired them to do our front yard a few months before that). This time again they did a superb job: Carter works carefully with clients, really listening to what they want done and having his crew follow up by delivering on those specific instructions. The whole operation is prompt, professional, reliable, and definitely competitively priced. I am definitely sticking with them for all my yard work and related jobs!"

"Two men arrived on the date promised. Actually, they were able to work this job in earlier than they first estimated, and they called first to make sure this was convenient for me. They were professional, polite, and pleasant to deal with. They assessed the situation accurately. I had earlier sent them photographs by email of the work that needed to be done. They worked very efficiently, repairing and strengthening the gates, replacing nails that were pulling out with screws, and adjusted the hinges where the gates dragged.  <br /> They arrived equipped with all the proper tools. They finished by sanding and re-staining the wooden gates. <br /> Thank you very much, Henderson Handyman Service.  It's great to know there are services like yours! <br />"

"This is the second time I have needed their help (the first being more than five years ago for fairly major repair of the track of my sliding glass door - which went well, by the way, which is of course why I hired them again!)... In June, I spoke with Herb initially about this job, and he provided very straightforward info up front about how they do things, which was good because it had been so long since I hired them. He was very understanding about my need to ensure my tenants that no one would come to the door, for their privacy, esp. given the pandemic. On the scheduled day, July 1, Chris showed up within our agreed-on time window to begin work. First, Chris went up and promptly assessed the damage, and then consulted with me. The patching of the leaking corner "L" joint of the gutter was a clear path as I predicted, though it would be some extra work to clean out my previous failed attempt to patch it with the wrong material. As to the damaged fascia boards below, my initial thought had been that at least two boards would need replacing (see my two before photos from Sept.). However, Chris advised against that since it would require complete detachment of the metal porch awning/roof extension to do that properly. He said that could be done, but it would be very costly, so he advised careful patching of the fascia as an alternative. I agreed to it, he went to get materials, came back, did the work, and it turned out looking really good - much better than I thought it could at the outset. [Several days later, my tenant painted over the area after the patch compound was thoroughly dry, and at that point, it was hard to even tell anything had been done there.] My experiences with American Handyman - so far only two, but five years apart - have been very good. They've been very professional, and I thought the pricing was fair considering the time it takes to do this work. I will call them first next time I need something done!"

"What a terrific company. They're there when they say they'll be there! They finish when they say they'll finish! Every person we worked with was friendly, accommodating, and exacting in every detail. We couldn't be happier with the finished project. Thanks everybody, but especially Brian and Danny, who reassured us every step of the way. It was a hot summer, but they kept us cool. Thanks, guys - you're the best!"

"Talked to Rush about a problem I had with water coming in one corner of my house after storms. Rush could have easily made some easy money coming out to fix the problem. After taking the time to listen to my description of what was going on though, he walked me through the steps I could take on my own to fix the problem pretty easily. It's always nice to find someone who is willing to help you out like that. Thanks Rush!"

"Mark Thomas of Straw Dogs and his contractors did an amazing job. Mark came in and rescued us from the work a previous contractor had started (and made a mess of). Mark was professional but friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to take the time to explain each step of the process, and he hired great subcontractors who share those qualities. We were a bit nervous after our experience with the first contractor, who took our money but either did not complete contracted work or provided shoddy work, but Mark worked with us to stick to our (reduced) budget and gave us detailed information during each step of the process so that we understood exactly what we were paying for and why. Work completed included: framing; insulation; drywall; plumbing and adding fixtures and shower tile for a 3/4 bath; installing a water heater; adding an electric panel, lighting, and outlets; adding windows and skylights; hanging doors; and adding a mini-split for AC/heat; daily clean up; and working with city inspectors to make sure that all permitting requirements were followed. The work was done in a reasonable amount of time, and the finished product was excellent. All of the subcontractors were skilled, hard-working, and gracious (Augie on framing, Eric of Schultz Electric, Eddie and the rest of the team at Pioneer Plumbing, Mark at Summit Heating and Cooling, Roberto with trenching, pavers, and other jobs, Preston Insulation, Gallagher Home Renovations, Lee Hoofman Roofers, Ricardo and his team at Detail Flooring, and everyone else who worked on the project). We are so happy with our experience with Straw Dogs and the end result. We now have an additional 400 square feet of usable living space that we all want to be in!"

FAQs for deck, fence, patio or porch clean and seal projects in Vail, AZ

You should clean your deck before sealing it. Cleaning before refinishing is critical. If you don’t remove dirt and debris, you'll trap moisture in the wood, which prevents the new sealer from working correctly and can lead to costly repairs. Whether you need to sand, power wash, or sandblast depends on your deck's condition.

Sealing and staining your deck are essential maintenance methods that protect and beautify your outdoor space. Stain adds rich color and guards against fading, while sealant fortifies the wood against moisture and weather damage. Wood type, climate, deck age, and the degree of existing damage determine whether your deck benefits from one or both treatments. Using both options extends your deck’s durability and enhances its overall appearance.

Power washing and sealing your deck costs $500 to $1,700. This process combines the removal of stubborn dirt and debris with a protective seal that preserves the wood’s integrity. Effective cleaning eliminates harmful buildup, and a proper seal prevents moisture damage and wood decay, ensuring long-term durability and reducing future repair expenses.

Your deck must be sealed every one to three years to maintain its strength and appearance. Regular sealing is essential to protect the wood against moisture, mold, and harmful UV rays. A consistent sealing schedule prevents rapid deterioration and costly repairs. Inspections should be performed annually to determine if the protective layer remains intact, extending the life of your deck.

Leaving your deck untreated compromises its structural integrity and safety. An unprotected deck rots quickly due to moisture and environmental exposure, which means that neglecting sealing results in rapid decay and expensive replacement costs of $4,125 to $11,650. Sealing your deck is essential for maintaining its durability and protecting your home.

The sealant on your deck dries within a few hours and reaches full cure within 72 hours before regular use. It is essential to wait until the complete curing period to ensure the protective layer fully sets and resists weather and foot traffic. Proper drying guarantees that your deck is fully protected against moisture and environmental damage, ensuring lasting quality.
