With energy prices on the rise and the price of solar technology on the decline, now might be the perfect time to reduce your carbon footprint. If you are interested in solar panels for your home, but are fearful that the cost may be too high, here are a few things to consider that will affect the cost of installing solar panels.

Understanding the Costs

Type of Solar Panel

There are three major types of solar panels that vary in price and work in different ways. As you can imagine, the most effective solar panels are the most expensive. Monocrystalline are the most effective and, as a result, most expensive type of panel Polycrystalline are slightly less effective than monocrystalline but are less expensive. Amorphous are the least expensive and the least efficient.

Type of Mount

The second factor that will affect the cost is the type of mount. There are three different types of mounting systems for affixing your solar panels to your home: fixed, adjustable, and tracking. Similar to the panel types, the least expensive option is the least efficient and the more expensive options are more effective. Most homeowners opt for the least expensive, fixed mount option.

Reduction in Energy costs

Although you may hesitate to spend the money on the most expensive types of solar panels and mounts, it is good to remember that you will save money on the other side with decreased energy bills. Talk to your installation pro about what kinds of savings they predict you might have. It could be that what you spend up front will pay for itself very quickly in your reduced monthly bills. Also, be sure to research any possible subsidies and rebates that might be out there. Your utility company will have that information.
