Comment: Hello, I'm considering buying a certain one-family home in the Kingston area (technically in the Town of Ulster) and splitting it into two dwelling units. I've checked the zoning and am confident it allows for an accessory apartment (or perhaps if I'm lucky maybe even conversion to a two-family). In deciding whether to buy it and if so at what price, I'm trying to get an idea of how much splitting it into two dwelling units will cost--in terms of all the permitting in addition to materials and labor. I'm hoping to find a professional (architect, structural engineer, or similar) who could review the property and tell me a couple of things: (1) Is there any reason (e.g. building code, fire code, some structural peculiarity) why the plan to split it into two dwelling units would not be feasible or reasonably economical? (2) If it is feasible and reasonably economical, what are the best options for how/where to split it, and about how much would I need budget for each? Depending on how

Comment: I'm considering purchasing a specific single-family home with the intent to split it into two dwelling units. I've studied the zoning and it's friendly toward accessory apartments (though converting it two a two-family would be even better if the town can be persuaded). The property has a Kingston mailing address, but it's in the Town of Ulster. To that end, right now I'm seeking professionals who can advise on (1) whether there's a structural, building code, or fire code reason that splitting it wouldn't be feasible or economical in general, (2) if splitting is feasible and economical, what are some options for how/where the building should be split (along with an estimated budget for each option). Depending on how things go, I could end up seeking assistance with permitting, contractor selection, and other tasks later on. Could I get a quote for how much this initial assistance would cost? (I'm easier to reach by email or text message rather than voice.) Thanks for your time.
