Cost increases: I mentioned roots upfront - he said equipment could handle it, then charged $450. Said grading unnecessary, then created false urgency claiming we HAD to grade before concrete. Later said could grade after. Added $1,800. Crew broke drainage pipes, charged me $250. Couldn't move AC condenser despite my asking during estimate. Payment tactics: Said pay "when satisfied." Then requested half early, then full payment before done. When I said work incomplete, he asked "Don't you trust me?" then broke promises. Broken promises: Walkway cured wrong, no follow-up. $1,800 grading included 3-month landscaping - no communication. Promised debris cleanup, later said not responsible. Damaged 4-month fence, couldn't repair properly, paid $300 after pressure. Dismisses costs at estimate, adds them later. Makes promises, then excuses."

"Crew arrived on time and worked efficiently. As the project progressed, 2 foundation cracks were discovered which added $900 to the original estimate. Old insulation along foundation wall was removed and replaced with silvery foam sheets. Joints were taped. Some leveling of the floor was done. Sheets were laid over the gravel floor also (crawlspace is not used for storage). 2 window well covers were installed. Our main goal was to have a warmer floor in the room above. "Mike came out to check out our back yard and discuss options with us.  He gave an estimate based on a most likely approach.  We decided to go with 3D, even though their price looked to be a bit higher than another highly rated provider, since 3D's availability seemed like it would fit better with our desired schedule.  We decided on a different design, though, that added cost to the quote.  It was great to be able to go to 3D's office in Des Plaines to look at the various paver options.  That definitely helped us choose the material we wanted.
The first work day was delayed by a couple of weeks due to the constant rains over the previous month.  This put 3D behind schedule.  When the crew came out to do the excavation and lay the gravel, the work went very well.  There were four guys working, plus some coordination with the truck for gravel delivery.  Mike was there in the morning to make sure the crew understood the job.  While there, they also installed a drain pipe for a new sump pump that had to go under the gravel and dug holes for concrete footers for some porch steps.  Then it was waiting for the inspection the following week.
3D was able to come back the morning after the inspection (much appreciated) to put down sand and lay the pavers.  Everything was done with a high degree of precision.  My one disappointment was that I would have preferred the pavers extend a half foot farther in one direction.  It was a matter of being 3 inches shorter or longer than my original target point.  I was told we couldn't go longer because the gravel base didn't extend far enough.  It would have been good if we could have ensured that in advance.  Not a huge deal, but the patio is only about 250 square feet, so an additional 5 to 10 square feet would have been noticeable.  They also poured the concrete for the footers that day.
3D had to come back a third day to finish up since the concrete didn't dry enough in time for them to remove the forms and work in that area.
Overall, a very good experience.  3D makes sure the job is a quality one.  And, they were fanatical about cleaning up the dirt and gravel in the alley!
