"Bill did a pretty good job installing our tile backsplash, though he said that he doesn't do lots of tile installation. He was able to start work a couple of days after we first contacted him. The job took him several hours longer than he intially estimated, but he stuck to his initial quote, which I appreciate. There were some minor spacing issues between some of the installed tile (if you look closely you can see the seam of one of the tile sheets, but it's usually covered anyway so no big deal), and the electrical outlets are not entirely flush with their covers. All in all, though, we added the new backsplash & countertops to get us through a few years until we can gut our kitchen and completely renovate it. This job looks good and will definitely serve that purpose."

"I don't think I can overstate how highly we think of the S & J Painting & Remodeling team! Steve Brownley was the specific contractor on our job and he was a pleasure to work with along with his team, Jose, Jose and Julio. Utterly reliable, creative and trustworthy they more than delivered on everything that S & J had committed to do.
They were always on time, there were no surprises, and they were so helpful when it came to problem solving for how best to create a kitchen counter bar when previously the island was all one level. His team were a delight to have in our home, always with great, cheerful and totally helpful attitudes.
And as the project progressed they paid attention to detail - noticing the sag in the kitchen floor and advising we look into that before putting on the very heavy granite countertops. We are BEYOND grateful for that wise suggestion. Because once they opened up the floor we found substantial termite damage and rot that would have led to a total kitchen collapse if it had gone untreated.
S & J adapted their schedule to create additional time to rebuild the floor from the guts up. Instead of telling us they were unavailable, they simply adapted with gracious flexibility to work us into their very busy schedule so that we could have a solid and healthy floor before they completed the rest of the remodel.
From top to bottom the kitchen is a dream. Precisely what we'd hoped for. They realized every item they'd committed to and were very careful to do finishing touch ups down to the smallest details of paint and electric outlet covers. They clearly take a great deal of pride in their work and it was an absolute pleasure to do business with them.
We were looking for a contractor who was easy to work with as this was our first home remodeling project and who would advise us, be creative, introduce us to reliable vendors, be open to taking on a project with a relatively modest budget, and still do a thorough job. We could not be more pleased! They responded promptly to all emails, calls, texts and followed through on everything they set out to do at a very reasonable cost.
We will 100% be going back to Steve at S & J Painting and Remodeling for all future projects we have planned for our house. You cannot go wrong with this team!
Approximate cost of services: $6,000
Approximate cost of additional materials: $4,000

"Even with a few days' delay due to power outage at the countertop supplier, our kitchen remodel started a day early and finished in two weeks flat! None of our friends could believe it when they saw how quickly it was going. Polo, Al, and their crews were fast and professional, and very responsive to any questions or concerns we had along the way. We're extremely happy with the results and would definitely use them again."

Butcher block countertops come in three main styles, each offering a unique look and function. Flat grain, also known as face grain, showcases the natural wood patterns, giving your kitchen a modern and elegant appearance. Edge grain is made from long, narrow wood strips, making it sturdy and providing a consistent grain pattern. End grain features a checkerboard pattern that is highly durable and perfect for heavy food preparation. Each style caters to different aesthetic preferences and usage needs, enhancing your kitchen's look and functionality.
With proper care, wood countertops can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years. To keep yours looking like new, clean up spills immediately and reseal the surface regularly—ideally once a month in the first year, then twice a year after that. Regular maintenance helps preserve the wood's beauty and durability for decades.
Wood countertops aren't hard to maintain if you keep up with regular care. Simply clean them with mild soap and water after use and reseal them monthly during the first year (then twice a year afterward). Using a food-grade oil or sealant protects the wood from damage. With a bit of routine maintenance, your countertop will stay beautiful and durable.
Wood countertops are sanitary with proper care and maintenance. By sealing them with a food-grade sealant and cleaning them regularly with mild soap and water, you create a barrier that prevents bacteria from getting into the wood. Always dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning to keep it hygienic and safe for food prep.
It's best to oil raw wood countertops once a month during the first year. After that, you can oil them twice yearly to keep them in good shape. If your countertop is professionally stained or sealed, you might not need to oil it as often. Regular oiling helps prevent drying and cracking, preserving the wood's natural beauty and durability.
