"Bill was absolutely fantastic, and I recommend him without reservation. We hired him to add a door at the top of our basement stairs, a project which also required adding a light, adding and finishing a railing, and walling up a cut-out section of wall. He also completed a smattering of other miscellaneous house projects for us. We were thrilled with his work on all of them. Bill's attention to detail matched my own, which I have found to be a bit rare. He is enthusiastic about making sure everything is done right, consulted with me regularly on design questions, went above and beyond in his pursuit of closest-match trim and hardware options, and explained a great deal about the issues involved in the projects and how he was approaching them. Bill is also just interpersonally delightful. I felt completely comfortable giving him a key to the house for the duration of the project. "When my husband and I were ready to move forward with the remodel, we researched several contractor options. We were looking for someone who performed quality work, who was trustworthy and who we could forge a long-term relationship with, as we continue to tackle our project "wish list" over the coming years. I found Higgins Construction on Angie's List and was impressed by not only the company's work portfolio, but also the owner's (Mike) values. He came out to meet with us shortly after we initiated contact, and I knew it was a good fit immediately. The remodel took place over the course of approximately two months (side note: at the time, Mike was booking work about three to four months out). Mike's team gutted the bathroom (we kept the toilet since it was in good shape and then the bathtub got refinished versus replaced). Mike's team installed new floors, dry wall, shower tile, canned lights and some new piping that was needed. We also worked with Mike's cabinet guy to custom design a new vanity that worked better for the space. Throughout the process, Mike kept us updated on what was going to happen when, who would be in and out of the house, and where we were at with the budget (and we really needed to stick to ours). His team had access to the house via a lock box, and were respectful of both our home and three pets (we crated/confined them if Mike's team was here when we weren't). The only reason I gave Higgins Construction a "B" for punctuality is because on some occasions, we'd be given a window of days when someone would show up versus a particular day. It took me a little longer to adjust to this as I'm more of a planner than my husband, but by a few weeks in, I wasn't giving it another thought and just operated on the assumption that someone would be here. The end result was beautiful and for all of the reasons cited, we absolutely will be using Mike and his team for future work (next up is likely a garage overhaul, in the spring)!

"What Tom does well: Thinks flexibly about design to meet the homeowner's requirements, has a talented cabinetmaker (or two), offers remodeling service at an excellent price point, and will ultimately correct most problems that are pointed out. We have a visually appealing kitchen with beautiful custom cabinet facing work and quartz counters, as a result of the efforts of Tom and his crew and subcontractors. He tends to focus primarily on one job at a time, which (at least by comparative reports) means he gets the job done on a shorter timeline than many other contractors. He uses competent plumbing and electrical subcontractors who do their work according to code requirements. In general his project scheduling was capably done, and the work was delivered on-budget. Where Tom could improve: On execution detail. He likes shortcuts, and initially did not want to repair sheetrock holes resulting from his team's demolition of the old cabinets (as the holes would be behind the new cabinets, not visible); some of the sheetrock areas that were fixed were poorly done, initially, and had to be re-done; undercabinet lighting wiring was routed without using wiring channels (wires were stapled to the sheetrock in the area behind the refrigerator, and duct-taped down in the cabinet over the range hood--again, these areas were not very visible). Cabinet interiors were melamine over particle board; this is difficult to work with, if one needs to route wiring through the shelving or put support screws through the cabinet sides, as drilling it quickly tends to "flake off" some of the melamine and, typically, breaks out some of the underlying MFD, too. That may or may not impair the structural integrity of the shelves, depending on how carefully it's drilled--in most cases the damage to the installed cabinetry was mostly visual, but largely out of sight, and limited (it still may bother perfectionists). The need for caulking/sealing at the rear tops of the backsplashes had to be pointed out before Tom took care of that, too. Still, overall, we are pleased with our remodeled kitchen."
