"Dan was excellent to work with. Professional and competent, he visited our home to determine the cause of the problem and to also complete the installation in the early evening hours, after a long day of other work. He contacted us when he was going to be delayed and followed up when circumstances changed. The charge was very reasonable for the work that was involved. Dan will be our electrician for any projects going forward. We highly recommend him."

"Old furnace died last winter but didn't have the money to replace at that time. Suffered through and at the beginning of this winter, AQM came to the rescue. I could see my breath in my kitchen at the beginning of December's cold snap. Spoke to AQM on a Thursday and they installed my new oil burner the following day. New furnace, new piping, new expansion tank, new flue and new thermostat. Installation crew did a tremendous job, cleaned up and removed old furnace. If it wasn't for the new furnace, I'd never have known they were there. Connie and Joe in the office were wonderful and worked with me to make sure we had heat at an affordable price. I recommend AQM to anyone needing HVAC work."

"Justin was great. After being told by several handymen and electricians that they were booked straight through December, I was able to get an appointment with Justin to come before Thanksgiving. I had a beautiful chandelier that I purchased from Overstock.com and we were very excited to see it up, ...but unfortunately I was missing one piece that the manufacture didn't include ( the bridge ) to hang it property. Justin ran out to purchase the part ( this was after 8pm ) and then went out AGAIN to purchase a tray needed to fill an ugly gap that was in the ceiling due the base from the original light fixture being wider. He made two trip to Home Depot ( the only store open at that hour on a Sunday ) just to finish the job for us. He did a beautiful job handing it and it looks great! We were very happy and appreciated his effort for all the running around he did to get it done that evening! Thax Justin! Darla & Ashfaq Malik in Macungie!"

"AFL conduct themselves very professionally, which is rare for contractors these days. The owner himself showed up for the estimate, gave a straight-forward assessment of the project, promptly followed up with an itemized written estimate, and answered all of my questions. Their communication is excellent- as their business cards say, they always answer their phones. Out of the 7 or 8 times I called them, I never reached an answering service, and if I had to leave a voicemail, I got a call right back from them- including once on a Sunday night. Im pleased with the project they did and will use them again."

"I moved my business to a new location and needed a company to wire my new office for internet. Penn Security called me within minutes of me submitting my request to Home Advisors. Although they could not do the work for wiring my whole office that day, they did come to give me a quote and to make sure that I had at least some sort of internet access. I cannot conduct business without internet. I thought that was so incredibly thoughtful and amazing of them. They did the work 2 days later and did a wonderful job. The crew was friendly, courteous and efficient. I have had no problems with the installation they performed and I would recommend them to anyone! Truly an amazing company!"

"I had a microwave high voltage transformer fail and parts were not longer available. The microwave was on a range hood fan circuit which also powered a lighting circuit. Instead of the 250 watt fan it replaced under a previous owner, the microwave pulled 1700-1900 watts The circuit also had lighting loads and a bathroom fan. The circuit load caused excessive voltage drop during every use (bathroom fan slowed down). Depending upon what was turned on the circuit breaker tripped, usually during family gatherings, about 5 times per year. The microwave was covered by my home repair warranty and a new microwave circuit from the panelboard had to be paid for separately. Keeler Electric had a good price for the new microwave circuit (I got about 5 bids) and I found out that Keeler could also do the installation of the microwave under the home warranty. Since the new microwave circuit needed to have a new circuit breaker installed, I took the opportunity to have some modifications to the panelboard done - relocation of a GFCI receptacle and extension of a plug-in transformer power cord that drove my cable television splitter box . Finally, the existing microwave receptacle was hidden IN THE WALL behind the cabinet above the microwave. The new circuit has the receptacle in the back wall of the cabinet for easy replacement of the microwave when needed in the distant future. The craftsman worked most of the day and completed all the work in a very professional manner -- all in one trip. If I had to use different contractors for the different work components multiple trips would have been needed. I am a retired Air Force facility engineering officer and I have done design and construction management in 4 countries outside the United States after I left military service. I monitored all work performed and I would definitely ask Keeler Electric for a quote on any future electrical work I may need."

"To be honest, we hardly ever write reviews but we just had such a terrific experience we feel compelled to. We just moved to Ardmore and needed to have several light fixtures installed. We checked Home Advisor and got 3 estimates & John Gambino was the most reasonable. Bill, our electrician, arrived on time and could not have been more personable. He took his time making sure everything was installed exactly as we wanted. He even took time to address some issues-a faulty outlet and a garbage disposal on the fritz-that were not part of the deal. He made sure we were satisfied at every step of the work and insisted on dumping the garbage and vacuuming up after the work!! (Even though we told him we would be happy to take care of it ourselves.) Everyone knows the stresses of moving from one State to another, but we can honestly say of all the people we dealt with (RE Agents, lawyers, movers, etc.) this was the most convenient, professional and even pleasurable interaction we have had. We cannot recommend John Gambino Electric highly enough, and if possible request BILL, you absolutely will be glad you did!!!"

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
