"I would recommend Ybarra Pro. to anybody looking for a remodel. Jake and Ryan came to my home ready to set sail on my exterior paint project and did not drop any sense of quality throughout. Phenomenal customer service and adequacy provided by their PM, Jessica, who was here every morning to advise my family and I what the process would be for the day and to answer any questions. we had a small hiccup from powerwashing rotted wood but surely enough, they replaced it without hesitation. Great job Ybarra!"

"My elderly sister suffered a strong power surge apparently caused by some issue with Portland General Electric. Oakley Electric sent a crew out with lead Troy Fisher, and they immediately went to work tracing down all affected electrical systems and outlets, installed a new surge protected electric box and assisted her with contacting her insurance company. They were all very attentive to detail and courteous. They also assisted in getting a furnace expert on site to replace her burned out furnace. Can't say enough about their excellent customer service."

We had some minor miscommunication about some of the details on electrical project but all was straitened out satisfactorily. Casey gave some recommendations that made my project better and completed what I needed within my budget. He even fixed a problem he found that wasn't in the work plan for no extra cost."

"We previously had a section of hallway drywall removed for work inside the wall. After searching and interviewing over several weeks for someone to repair this hole and paint the wall, we happened upon Meadowlark. What a difference! The guys who came to the house for the estimate were so courteous. They acknowledged our concern the job might be too small (why most other vendors either wouldn't take the job or didn't return our calls). They told us they'd be happy to do the work. They were prompt, efficient, true to time and cost estimate, and the work quality was excellent. Their office called with courteous reminders and were most helpful with our questions. We would hire them again in a heartbeat and have already recommended them to our friends and neighbors."

"Professional, came prepared for things he was not even aware of before he arrived. Everything was put back together and mess all gone when he left. John came out to my home to help frame in 4 new doors and helped remove the existing ones. We ordered larger doors than the space could fit and he was able to make the necessarily changes to install the new ones. We also had him make a repair to a broken toilet flange we had in our guest bathroom damaged by the previous contractors who attempted guest bathroom renovation. He was able to provide solutions for us when we needed help and now are considering his services for our master bathroom. We continue to call upon his services when needed and would absolutely recommend him to anyone who are looking for handy man services or bathroom renovations. He prioritized our home, time and made us feel taken care of."

Residential & Commercial, Electrical Contractor, Licensed & Insured

"I am new to this whole Home Advisor thing and after I was applaud by other companies I went for it. Tom Brown from Brown Bothers set up an estimate with great timing and was early to the meeting. He was very thorough and even commented on issues he saw that were dangerous. 2 bids were sent (one for just house grounding and one for whole electrical panel replacement and grounding). We went with both and he was early again to the install. A payment plan was created as I am disabled and limited budget. I am in my 50's so I want to know all I can about what is up with my house. Tom was extremely knowledgeable and personable. He was open to me to ask questions and learn as well. Plus while he worked we were able to just chew the fat without hesitation of the work. Tom is the soul example of a perfectionist. The old circuit breaker was a horrific mess!! By the time it was all done it looked like the house was built THAT DAY with everything so neat and tidy I could see the excellence in his work. And his personality showed not only professionalism but also down to earth with a good heart (not seen very much nowadays). Now onto the real heart of what a great professional and man Tom is! My wife and I had an emergency come up and we were hit financially. I addressed this to Tom and he and I set up a time to make the next payment when I could. He could have said no and demanded the next payment as per scheduled but he showed compassion and understanding, bringing this old bear of a guy to his knees with tears of happiness to be treated with care and respect. Would I refer Tom and his company to anyone in need? The answer is a resounding YES!! You want a job well done and have a great guy to chat with then call Brown Bothers. They will treat you right!!"

"We had to replace our water main. Before it could be inspected we had to address an electrical grounding issue. It was a simple issue but preplexed us. Brandon Neustel called me shortly after receiving an alert from Angi. He assured me that he could take care of the issue and do it on my timeline. He was knowledgeable and explained what he would have to do clearly and went about doing so efficiently. We would most certainly reccomend him and will call him again should we need an electrician. Pricing was very resonable."

"I wanted to have a new 200amp panel installed to replace my existing 100amp panel. After calling several different electricians and getting the run around, I finally found Lon at Hood River Electrical. Lon, the owner, came out within a week to make a site visit. Together we reviewed my options and then gave a quote that I felt was fair. Lon put me at ease and I felt comfortable that the work would be done quickly and by the book. When PacificPower turned off the power and the meter box was removed, Lon discovered that it would need to be replaced. Knowing the tight timeline and my expectations, Lon went out of his way to get a new box and install it so that the power was on when I got home. Communication with contractors can always be difficult but Lon gave me consistent updates that gave me piece of mind while the work was being done. I highly recommend Hood River Electrical to anybody in the Portland area looking for an electrician. I plan on using Hood River Electrical in the future!"

"Apex Mechanical was really easy to do business with. Based on my description of the project, the company requested photos. Once that was done, I got a complete project description, in writing, with all the details spelled out. Once I accepted the proposal, a scheduler contacted me. The worker was on-time, indeed early, and got the project done quickly after (normal) initial discussions about where certain items should be installed. A very polite installer, was a pleasure to talk to. In fact, I decided (since he had been early) to offer another project to him. He asked me to call his office for a quote. Some more photos and a phone call later, and I got two projects done without having to schedule another appointment. I highly recommend Apex Mechanical. Homeowner in Vancouver, WA"

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
