"Iâ ve been working with Henry for a few years now. He replaced and upgraded my electrical panel, installed lighting outside my home, and installed lights in my basement. He is really experienced and very easy to work with. Since I donâ t know much about the technicalities of the work, he took the time to explain to me what heâ s going to do, how and by when. He always goes above and beyond to meet the timelines he set at the onset of the project and the quality of his work is outstanding."

They did more then expected by installing EV charger onto wood plywood. Reasonable price. Nice, pleasant owner, who helped with paper work for permit. "We could not be happier. Nick and his team installed new electrical in the second floor addition to our home (including heat), installed an electric car wall charger, and completed some electrical upgrades to our first floor. They did an outstanding job from start to finish. Always showed up on time, were easy to get in touch with, extremely respectful, and made sure to answer any questions we had along the way. In addition, they are extremely knowledgeable and always had our best interest at heart. Their work speaks for itself and we will definitely be hiring them again in the future."

    Electrician

"I live in Morristown and found MD Electrical Solutions via HomeAdvisor. I had quite a list of electrical work to be done, including i) new light fixture wiring and installation in my living area, ii) install new ceiling fans in bedrooms and living area, iii) install recessed lighting in hallway, iv) replace several switches throughout with new smart-enabled switches, v) re-wire switch locations for fans to single new location, and vi) re-locate thermostat wall placement. Not really knowing where to start with all of this, I'm sure glad I called these guys... After just a few days of cumulative work, Mark, Tommy, and Mike were able to finish everything at a very reasonable price! They are all very stand-up guys and did such a great job with providing their input on resolving issues with optimal light placement and more. All I can say is that I will unequivocally be calling them back for all my future electrical work."

"I needed assorted areas addressed due to a building assessment review before a sale. It was wonderful to work with someone who gave a fast and honest appraisal of the work that needed to be done. There was an outlet that was flagged as not working, but that was found to be lightswitch. There was a broken light fixture, replaced quickly. A loose outlet box tightened. The list was significant, but handled quickly and professionally. Charged 1.75 hours plus materials. HIGHLY recommended."

"We initially contacted Gomez Vision Construction to install our bathroom countertops. We talked to Jorge for first consultation and estimate. We were so impressed by Jorge's knowledge about the work scope, so we discussed other projects with him and we really liked his proposals. We ended up signed a contract with him for doing our countertops for not only bathrooms but also for the kitchen, as well as the installation of bathroom tile floors and toilets. He quoted us a very competitive price, we initially was a little skeptical about their quality of works, but was really impressed once his crew started working on the projects. They arrive on promised time, work long hours each day, and paid close attention into details, and finished each projects on time without sacrificing quality of work. Both me and my wife feel that we made a right decision to hire them and decided to give them more work (installation of garage door opener, installation of chandelier, update our electric system, replace our sump pumps....). We feel that we will have long term working relationship with this company for future home improvement projects because they are very trustworthy, reliable, and honest."

"Greg the owner of Papa Grieves is an amazing, incredibly honest and dependable pool expert. He came to my house on Friday to repair my propane heater. The heater needed 2 parts and Greg only had 1 of the required parts on his truck. He called me, explained what needed to be done and that he would come back on Saturday to finish the job. Greg said that although the heater had a great deal of rust, he could fix it so that it would work for the remainder of the season. He did NOT try to see me a new heater, but I asked him what a new heater would cost. The price he quoted me was 20% less than what my current pool company, that did not return my call about my heater not working gave me at the beginning of the season. I asked him if he could install the new heater on Saturday, because I was having a big party on Sunday and he said the heater was in stock and that he could do the job the next day. Saturday morning the rain was coming down in buckets and I did not expect Greg to show up. But to my shock and amazement, at 10 AM the Papa Grieves Pool truck pulled into my driveway. In the pouring rain Greg and his assistant Raul removed the old heater and installed the new one. They performed all of this work without asking for a deposit or credit card for security. The heater works great. PARTY SAVED!!!!! That you Papa Grieves!!!!!"

How much do electricians typically cost?

  • Low End - High End
    $100 - $1,200

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
