"I hired them to sweep the chimneys for my fireplace and woodburning stove. A tech arrived on time and was pleasant. However he admitted he was new to the company and industry and after looking at the fireplace and woodburning stove informed me that he was not familiar with the two systems and could not do the work. He took pictures and told me his boss- the company owner- would call me the following week to set a time for a more experienced person to do the work. They never called. I called twice and left messages that were not returned. I appreciate the fact the tech did not try and do the job he was not comfortable with and mess something up. However very disappointed they did not call back or at least return my calls. I guess they were not interested since it was a more challenging job."

"Excellent work from start to finish. My father was a mason, so I know great work when I see it. First, they brought in a tear-down team to remove the chimney down to the first-floor roof level of our two-story house. After which, they rebuilt the chimney to original height installing approximately 900 new bricks using a new Type N mortar. They installed a new 5" thick concrete crown with a 2" drip edge and an expansion joint. They replaced all accessible sections of fireplace clay flue tile extending 4" - 6" above the concrete crown. Installed new stainless steel chimney cap. Installed 2 sets of new step and counter flashing. Installed 2 sets of new ice water shields and shingles as needed. Cleaned and weather sealed chimney entirely upon completion. After the chimney rebuild was done, the Mason, Seth, and his crew cleaned the work site, to include the whole driveway. They are a very efficient and thorough team. I understand that they like to leave the customer's house and yard as clean or better than they find it."

"After contacting several companies is the only one that showed up and provided a quote. After speaking with Brent I was convinced he had experience with replacing the roof flashing boot on my gas fireplace where others did not. Quality work at a fair price. Showed up when they would, cleaned up when they left. Will probably hire again for other projects."

"They did a great job. The technician was on time, polite, very quick, and knowledgeable. The technician answered all of my questions, and gave me helpful tips about how to use and care for my chimney/fireplace. I have also purchased chimney caps from them, which they are scheduled to install soon. I would definitely recommend them."

"Dan was great to work with. Very punctual and professional. He got the work completed in the time frame promised and for the original quoted amount. The quality of the work was generally very good. Dan was also very careful around our cats and made sure they didn't sneak out of the house. The only issues we had were that with the tile flooring installed, it was hard to use a bathmat because of clearance between the floor and the door... a relatively minor annoyance. Also, our garage which they used for cutting up the wood and tile smelled a little bit like cigarettes. Despite that, I would absolutely recommend Smith Rogers flooring again."

"WE highly recommend Appalachian Gas Works. Jason did an excellent job replacing the outside gas lines to our two fireplaces which the gas company said needed replaced. Jason was punctual, conscientious and professional. We thought he was very reasonable for the extended work that was needed to also replace inside lines in our basement ceiling!!!"

"Jody Plant Masonry did a complete chimney rebuilt. Jody, the owner, answered all my questions I had throughout the project. The work was done in a professional and timely manner. All the workers were polite and each and every day cleaned up after themselves. Anytime there was any type off issue, Jody was on it and had it taken care of right away. The final product looks great, and I would definitely use Jody 's company again in the future and would refer him to others. Also, the cost of the project was very competitive and fair."

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in Washington Court House, OH

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
