"Mike fixed the problem so that my remote garage door opener (the one that stays in my car) now can open & close the garage door. It was something that I couldn't do myself, because it required technical knowledge about the workings of the unit on the garage ceiling."

"I am a facilities manager and typically would have made adjustments to my garage doors but time is limited so I hired Greg to come out and go over them. I am glad I did, Greg showed up on time and went over my doors and had the time to check one I didn't plan on and he found it was in need of some parts, which he had on his truck. I found Greg to be honest, easy going, and experienced. His rate is fair and the work done in a timely manner. I would use him again and recommend him to anyone needing garage door service. I like to support local small business owners since it is very hard to run a business in CT."

"They provided an estimate on repair and replacement and have ordered the door and will be out to install the door The estimate process was very good, they explained things well and they were able to show me options and tried to match the architecture of the house so I could see what the door will look like."

"American Home Building worked on numerous projects at our new home in Berlin. From a customized 3 car garage to replacing decking and railings on porches and things in between such as installing new windows and replacement doors. They completely overhauled a home in roughly 6 months 3 of which were winter. Whether it’s big or small or anything in between give this guy a shot!"

FAQs for garage and garage door service projects in East Berlin, CT

Enclosing a carport essentially turns it into a garage. You’ll start by framing and finishing exterior walls, then add a garage door (averaging $1,200), windows, and wiring for lights or outlets.

Plan for site prep and, if needed, a thicker slab to handle the added weight. Once the walls are up, insulation, drywall, and exterior siding create a secure, weather-tight space that protects vehicles and gear year-round.

A well-built carport may not add a huge dollar figure to an appraisal, but it can boost buyer appeal. Covered parking protects vehicles and lawn equipment, sharpens curb appeal, and fills what might otherwise be an empty driveway space. If the carport matches your home’s style and stays in good repair, it can make the property more attractive and competitive when you decide to sell.

Most cities and counties require a building permit for a new carport. Fees range from $60 to $800, depending on local codes and the size of the structure. Getting the permit upfront ensures the carport meets zoning rules and HOA guidelines, protecting you from fines or expensive retrofits later. Check with your building department—or ask your contractor—before ordering materials or scheduling installation.

A poured concrete slab is the gold standard for carport foundations. Concrete delivers superior load-bearing strength, keeps posts level, and resists shifting in freeze-thaw conditions. While gravel, dirt, or permeable pavers cost less upfront, they can’t match concrete’s long-term stability, especially if you might convert the carport into a garage later. Investing in a slab now can save money and hassle down the road.

Pre-made kits start at $300 and bundle all the required parts—sometimes installation, too—making them the most budget-friendly option. Custom carports cost more ($12 to $40 per square foot plus labor) but let you match the design, size, and finishes to your home.

If price and quick setup top your list, go with a kit. If you have a tricky layout or want a seamless aesthetic, investing in a custom build is worth the premium.
