The project was a success.  We have received nothing but compliments from everyone on the finished project, and the kitchen is so much more functional than before.

Derrick was reasonable in price, timeline, and allowing us to things like demo and painting, etc. to save on cost.  He showed up on time (early every morning) every day, and he and his crew worked diligently throughout the day.  They were polite and well-mannered, with no foul language or lewdness (important as I have young children who were home throughout the whole thing).  I don't think they smoked.

The kitchen was gutted and the layout completely changed.  He installed new plumbing, new electrical, rerouted air ducts, installed a vent hood, new cabinets, sink, etc.

The work took about 2 months, which is longer than predicted, but that had to do with the granite countertops being late and not Derrick's schedule.  We had only a couple of minor issues, which he came back out and fixed immediately.

The first thing he did was build the new deck, which he wisely convinced me to do 16x16 rather than 16x12.  Then he realized as he was building the stairs that the normal-width stairs weren't going to look right with the deck, so he made the change to a wider stair, and he was absolutely right.

He helped me figure out how to do the tile backsplash so that it looked right with the cabinets, and I am really pleased with his work.

Since we didn't employ the services of a designer or project manager, Derrick was essential in helping guide us through the decisions that we didn't know we'd have to make.

He was perfectly agreeable to the use of alternative materials like plywood planks we cut for flooring.

When it's time to gut the hall bath renovate it, I hope that he is available to do that work, too.

The only thing that I wish I had done different, since I was doing the painting, is that I wish that I had said no to MDF and stuck with wood for the shelving.  Now that it's all painted, you can't tell the difference, and it looks and functions great, but MDF is much more complicated to paint for a novice.

The $30,000 price tag is for the whole project - appliances, cabinets, materials, labor, etc.  I don't remember the breakdown.
