"West Lake Construction removed existing roofing shingles on my large house ( 63 squares!) and installed architectural composition shingles. They had to replace ten sheets of new CDX plywood. The boss was Tyler Weston, who knows his roofing. He was always nice to work with. His crew was hard-working and knowledgeable. He kept on budget. They cleaned up really well. I highly recommend this company. "

"Tony is super communicative- from our initial inquiry to the day of the project. He is very knowledgeable and offered great suggestions to make our project even better than we hoped. He encouraged us to buy items that we felt comfortable purchasing, and on those technical items, he gladly stepped up. He reached out to us the weekend before the work and again the day before. On his scheduled day he was on-time and prepared to get to work. Tony is safety conscious for all in the home, including pets. His knowledge and experience show through as there are no wasted steps or efforts. Starting on time, he finished early. He is extremely clean and tidy, leaving the work site better than when he arrived. Tony is polite, cordial, knowledgeable, efficient, professional, and a genuinely nice person you would want to have coffee with. We are pleased with the end product and will definitely be calling him for future work. Hire him, you will have no regrets. "

"Not only did Derrick and his crew completely redo the foundation of our house plus install flooring, but they were timely polite communicative easy to work with and did an excellent job. I can’t say enough good things about them. They took over a project in the middle of it and coordinated with us as it’s our vacation home and we don’t live in the same town. I can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate them and will be using them in the future!!!"

Choosing the right Home Inspector can be difficult. Unlike most professionals, you probably will not get to meet me until after you hire me. Furthermore, different inspectors have varying qualifications, equipment, experience, reporting methods and yes, different pricing. All of our inspectors hold Associats Degrees in Building Inspection Technology which required classes in Building Codes, Electrical Codes, Mechanical Codes, Plumbing Codes, Engineering Classes, Plan Review Classes and technical Report writing classes. All new employeees go through an extensive consistetency training program before going to work for us, so you always get the same highly efficient, educated and friendly staff who understand the key diffrnece between a minor defect and a serious structural concern. We don’t write books we write quality easy to read reports.\n \nOne thing for sure is that a home inspection requires work, a lot of work. Ultimately a thorough inspection depends heavily on the individual inspector’s own effort. If you honor us by permitting us to inspect your new home, I guarantee we will give you our very best effort. This we promise you. Anything less and you can call us below 24 hours a day 7 days a week.\n \n\nJack Applegate, CBO 503-812-9399 inspbuild@hotmail.com\nBrandon Zipser 503-931-6272 bzipser@hotmail.com

"I was surprised it only took about 4hours total, even with the last minute change we requested. My biggest concern was not to lose indoor light. Everything turned out beautifully!"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Astoria, OR

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
