"They told us the date they would be there and how long the job would take.  They were right on point.  Anytime an issue came up, and whenever someone is working on your house there usually is, they were right on it, evaluated the situation, and told us what would need to be done (without charging).  I can't tell you how much we appreciated their knowledge and professionalism.  They were always on time and if they were running late, they called to let us know ( I really can't count 10-15 mins as being late) :) <br /> Everything seems to be in good working condition but the real test will come during the summer. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"I waited a month before getting a test kit I called and was told there was something wrong with the Angies list orders but that I would be receiving a kit soon. It wouldve ben nice if they called me to tell me that though. The test results were quick and on par with other radon test I had done locally."

"We are out of state buyers looking to relocate to Tennessee. Tommy Kirby of 1st Choice Home Inspections completed our home inspection on the day and time arranged, as promised. He contacted us promptly afterwards with the results. He even advised us that due to what may be some costly repairs on the home, possibly causing us to reconsider the purchase, he would withhold submitting a well test that he performed, to his lab until we made the decision, saving us another $275. This is only the third time we've bought a home, but neither of our previous 2 home purchase inspections were as thorough and informative as this one. We most definitely will use his services again and highly recommend him."

"He conducted a very complete and detailed inspection of a house we are looking to purchase..  He started on the roof and worked his way around the property and then through the interior.  He took numerous pictures of all areas of  concern.  Upon completion he sat down with us and went over each item and his recommendations.  Within 2 days we had a very detailed written report, we he sent us electronically,  showing all the areas he found with a picture of the item, what the problem was and what need to be down to correct the problem.  He also did a Radon test and arraigned for a termite/pest inspection and provided written reports of both of these. <br />"

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Athens, TN

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
