"We partnered with Wilber’s for external painting and repair. This included replacing wood with composite where necessary and removal of wood shutters and replacement with polypropylene ones. What distinguished this company from others was the following: Danny S. was the estimator and initially met with my husband. Just prior to the start of the project, Danny returned with the foreman Olger A. He went through the project again with us and talked to Olger about job specifics. Olger is an amazing foreman, on time, efficient, skilled, detailed and an excellent project manager. Danny returned mid project to discuss the work with us and review a repair with Olger. They also did extra work for us not covered with the additional estimate which was handled very efficiently. Additionally, they did some picky repairs, such as reattaching a leader to the house, which was appreciated. The result was a beautiful house with great curb appeal – the result of good teamwork. We highly recommend them."

"I used (Dan) Maltby Construction to put a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and a 4' x 4' skylight in my living room, transforming what was a very ordinary living room into a fantastic performance space and piano lounge. The work he did was outstanding, with top notch craftsmanship and materials and exceptional attention to details. There were a lot of decisions to be made during the construction process, and Dan worked with me to make sure I got exactly what I wanted--my happiness truly was his focus. He had many excellent suggestions for me along the way, including the wrapping of a previously-wallboard-clad 4"x4" vertical beam in the same cabinet quality plywood he wrapped the spectacular exposed beams in. And the end results are truly awesome, the room a beautiful space for my piano with acoustics warm and live, and an ambience which is exactly what I'd hoped for. Dan also proved invaluable to me by recommending, among other things, a top-notch granite provider for my kitchen counters, a roofer for fixing a small leak around an unneeded vent, a backpack leaf blower for maintaining the heavily wooded lot surrounding my piano lounge in the forest, and numerous tools, materials and techniques for my many upcoming DIY projects (those not really needing a contractor of Dan's quality). So as you can tell, communication with Dan was also top shelf. Yes, and he also took care of all the permitting and inspections (no problems encountered, by the way) and working with my architect as well. "We wanted a small deck. I had quotes from Lowes and another contractor. Gary responded quickly to my initial call and provided samples, pricing and suggested a design. He had the best price and wanted no money up front. He also worked with our town's building department to come to a final design they would approve. From the time of final approval, the crew started work within a reasonable timeframe and took about a week. The deck looks good and feels solid. As Gary advised the darker colors really do get hot, even if there's just late afternoon sun. A bit of a downside: if you need minor adjustments/corrections and you're not in an area he usually works in, there is a wait for a crew to be in your area to address."

"This is my third time working with Monk’s and I’ve been pleased every time. Chris Klug led my bathroom project this time and was fantastic. Super professional, and extremely responsive via text, phone or email! The entire team at Monk’s works to get projects completed quickly and within timeline - from initial estimates by Ryan to the final product overseen by Chris! They will not end the project until the customer is completely satisfied."

"I found him through Angie’s List. He was phenomenal. He was unbelievable. I had never seen a small businessman so customer focused. One of my deck posts was rocking and asked him to replace it and include it in the bill. He said he would replace it but said he would not include it in the bill. It would probably cost $25 but he made a customer delighted."

FAQs for arbor, pergola or trellis custom build projects in Basking Ridge, NJ

Pergolas and gazebos are both outdoor structures, but there are differences between the two. A pergola has a slatted roof that allows partial sunlight to filter through, creating a light and airy space. In contrast, a gazebo features a solid roof that provides complete shade. This key difference influences the comfort and visual appeal of your outdoor space.

Prefabricated pergola kits require one to four hours of assembly, while custom pergola designs take an average of eight to 16 hours. Additional groundwork, such as pouring a concrete slab, leveling the site, and removing obstructions, may extend the installation process to several weeks, ensuring a secure and long-lasting build.

A standard pergola kit ships with everything you need—four support posts, rafters, top runners, support beams, and hardware for anchoring the frame to a concrete pad. Many manufacturers also bundle add-ons like retractable canopies, privacy screens, or modular sections that let you tweak the footprint. Because each part is pre-cut and labeled, the kit helps you—or your contractor—assemble a sturdy, attractive structure without extra trips to the hardware store.
