"Roger C Collins, Electrical Services Inc. – Angi’s Review Electrical Project Overview – Remove, replace, and consolidate the main electrical power panel and two adjacent electrical sub-panels into a single electrical power panel. Project review - Shortly after posting the project description for my Electrical Project on Angi’s, I received a text message and phone call from Roger C. Collins. He asked if he could drop by to speak with me and obtain more details about my project. Later that same day, Roger met with me, examined the panels, and explained the required steps in the process to perform this job. Roger was very knowledgeable about the sordid history and issues with main electrical panel and circuit breakers which were manufactured by Federal Pacific Electric. This project required the following sequential steps be performed: 1. Confirmation from the Electric Company that the existing service feed was sufficient to provide power to the desired rating of the replacement panel. 2. Selection of a new power panel which was approved by the Electric Company for use as a replacement panel. 3. Application and approval of a Building Permit to perform the project. 4. Schedule with the Electric Company, a shut off date and time. 5. Remove the existing electrical panels and consolidate all the circuits into the new electrical power panel. 6. Coordinate an Electrical Inspection to allow the Electric Company to restore electrical power to my home. Roger and two other Angi Electrical Contractors also provided bids for this project. Roger’s bid was competitive with the others. My primary reason for selecting Roger was his extensive knowledge about the sordid history and issues with Federal Pacific Electric products. It also needs to be noted that Roger’s wife, Monica, did an outstanding job of interfacing and coordinating with the Electric Company and Building Permits Department. On the day this project was started, everything was well coordinated and orchestrated. The Power Company showed up at 7:45 am sharp to turn off the power. As soon as the power had been turned off, Roger and his two Electrician Assistants began the process of removing the existing power panel and two sub-panels. All was going well until a terminal lug on the almost 50-year-old meter box broke off while installing a new feed wire. My Father always told me that sometimes, things don’t always work out the way you planned and when that happens you need to adapt and overcome to get the job done. And that’s exactly what Roger and his Assistants did. While Roger & his Assistant Electrician continued with installing the new Electrical Panel, his other Assistant Electrician went off to obtain a new meter box. Shortly after returning with the new meter box, the new feed was installed, and the project had reached a point where an inspection needed to be performed for the Electric Company to restore power. Thanks to the wonders of Technology, the Inspection was performed using FaceTime. The Building Inspector was pleased and provided the Electric Company with authorization to turn the power back on. By 5:30 pm, as the sun was setting, Roger and his two Electrician Assistants had completed my project and cleaned up after themselves. I considered this to be a major accomplishment. Without question, Roger’s 30 plus years of experience was a key factor in the success of my project. Roger and his Team were fantastic. He did exactly what he said he would do and got the job done within the timeframe he had projected. If you are looking for a well-qualified and experienced Electrician, Roger is the one you want working on your project. If you should have any questions about this review, please feel free to contact me."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Benson, AZ

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
