"Scott and company were easy to deal with and did everything they said they would do. I had them sister some joists, finish  rooms in the basement, add lighting and a wet bar. They also put down some tile and put in a bigger service panel. Permits were pulled and inspections completed. I would recommend adding Miller Building to your list of potential service providers <br>"

"They were very helpful. I worked with them daily. The people that they sub contracted to do the tile and carpeting were excellent. They had a lot of good advice. They gave me samples of everything. They made sure I had the warranties that I had asked for."

"Bruce arrived to start the job on time and is quite methodical, with everything going in the right order. He has the tools to do ANYTHING and completely filled our 2 car garage with tools, materials, cabinets, etc. Since everything was replaced, he had to use skills on so many levels, including dry wall, insulation, flooring, electrical, plumbing, granite work, painting, heating, etc. I think he truly excels at molding/trim work and the cabinet installing. Perfection. An example of true attention to detail: Since they had to cut into our floor joists (beneath the bathroom) to accommodate new drain systems, Bruce took it upon himself to find a local metal fabricator to create steel U-shaped supports so that our floor remained as strong as before. Some people would have left that out.... He wanted things to be correct and often asked for our approval...making any changes we requested along the way. He is approachable. He had a great, professional introduction the first day we met and proposed a budget. Why we did not give Bruce all A's---and if there is any down side---it would be a rather severe minimizing of the total amount of time needed for the project. As a builder, he is hard to fault in that we did stick to our agreed budget and if he was working for weeks beyond the planned completion time...well, it was not costing us any more. I believe Bruce to be a very honest person and understand that any building project has delays. Toward the end, as another project became reality, I believe Bruce lost some focus here. That said, we are happy with our finished bathroom and make a positive recommendation. Your Designs LLC can be trusted. ((I am having trouble porting over pictures...sorry...if I can add them later, I will. For now, I can say I think it looks just as we planned...and this company delivered!))"

"We drew up an idea of what we were thinking about and he took our idea and brought it to life.   We are so happy with it and so our our animals.  It's been a few years old now and it holding up just great and I am glad we agreed on a metal roof as he suggested and a gutter system. <br />"

"From the first meeting, we really immediately felt he was focused on learning what we wanted from this project. A week later he showed sketches that demonstrated his understanding of what we wanted -- they were amazing!Michael was always professional, enthusiastic and understanding. He never argued, but instead immediately got behind our new thoughts and integrated them into the design. It was a more like us all working on a team than him simply being someone providing a professional service. His design sense is amazing. His design details and thoughts helped us see our house in an entirely new way. He has an easy comfort with designing for the dramatic and for the simple. When done, he presented a set of design documents that were more detailed than most house plans -- nothing was left to chance. When a question or problem came up during the project, he was always there for us, often showing up within minutes of the call. We could not have been happier with the outcome."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Big-bay, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
