"From the time of our first conversation to our consultation and throughout our entire project Demetrius was there every step of the way. We had a vision of what we wanted for our patio and deck, Demetrius made sound suggestions and the project was implemented. Project completion time was estimated to be 2 weeks, weather permitting. Demetrius and his team completed the job with efficiency and kept us totally informed as to what phase his team would be working on each day. We are so in awe of our new outdoor space and will definitely be utilizing our outdoor space more often. We are so pleased with our new backyard. What a big difference this has made! Thank you for an extremely pleasant experience! We would definitely recommend Simmons Handyman Service for your remodeling needs and certainly will be using them again when we are considering another project."

"Perfecyt! The men arrived right on time. they were patient about waiting while my husband asked them questions about the work they were to do. The quality and timing of their work amazed me. We now have everything set up for my husband. He had been through 3 surgeries and some Rehab time. We really needed to put in some safety measures for him. I would definitely ask for the Elite Home Remodeling Group for any further work."

"Alex and Sara were great to work with. Alex is very detailed and has a good vision for the overall project. I actually had them put flooring and a barnwood wall in the sunroom first. Instead of putting joint pieces up. Alex had them cut the boards exactly to the corners. It looks FANTASTIC! I also gutted the bathroom in the basement and the guys did great work. The workers were friendly and were not lazy. The rest of the basement was pretty straight forward. By the time I purchased all the materials, the cost was more than I had anticipated, but the quality of the work made it worth not choosing the cheapest option. I plan to hire APX again for a job next spring."

"We hired General Remodeling Group to remodel our outdated kitchen. This was our first major home remodeling and we were completely overwhelmed with the project. Vidas, the project manager, and his staff were truly valuable in walking us through this process. He listened patiently while we described our ideas and offered suggestions and sage advice. He was always available either through texts or emails. His prompt responses were appreciated. Max was also so helpful through every step of the remodel. He accompanied us to the various vendors to help and advised us in choosing our countertop, backsplash, flooring, wall paints etc. He was always patient with us as we spent a lot of time trying to make good decisions. Part way through the project, Max discovered water damage from the bathroom above the kitchen.Vidas and Max informed us right away and we worked on an agreeable solution for repairs. We were so impressed with Max's attention to detail and his quality of work. The other crew members, Hilario and Richard's (the tile expert) work were exceptional and again, their attention to detail were amazing. We are so pleased with our new kitchen. From start to finish, it was a very good experience. We had a few minor blips here and there, but Vidas or Max took care of them quickly and efficiently. The price for the entire project was reasonable and the project was completed as scheduled. Definitely, we will call upon General Remodeling Group for our future home remodeling projects."

"Francisco, Honika and the HomeBreakthorugh team always do a wonderful job in coming up with ideas and designs that we wouldn't think of, and which often will save us money. They are also very responsive to requests, questions, and concerns. We are very happy with our basement. Home Breakthrough has also done a bathroom and a kitchen reno for us as well. Very good work, and reasonably priced."

"Fantastic experience with a responsive, highly skilled, professional team. We initially contacted LFC to redesign a half wall/counter in a basement kitchenette area so we could remove and replace an old refrigerator. Tony listened, assessed the situation and came up with a very creative and cost effective solution for our problem. They cut back the half wall and kept the counter by carefully cutting it and installing a hinge so it could swing up and down. To save on flooring costs, they used extra carpet and tile that we had and blended it in. We were so pleased that we had him come back out to look at the recurring rotten wood problem around our front door entryway and our garage door. Tony suggested cost effective, non-wood materials, and a custom design by his carpenter to preclude further water erosion. Both projects were completed in a timely manner by a team of highly skilled professionals who take pride in their work. The level of detail in the intricate carpentry work is exceptional."

"I highly recommend City Renovations and Remodeling to new and experienced homeowners and investors. In fact, Mike Wiggs, owner of the company, was highly recommended to me from a trusted source. Mike has been my designer, general contractor and project manager for over three years. He and his team of subcontractors for all the trades and handymen have successfully completed numerous projects for me. The internal big jobs included Mike and his team remodeling my basement into a permitted apartment with an egress window, injection well system, and recessed lighting; remodeling my kitchen into a larger space, better layout and upgraded appliances, cabinets, backsplashes (e.g., switching from an electric cooktop island to a slide-in gas range and installing a peninsula); changing the location of the sliding door and a set of windows in my sunroom for better flow and sightline from the front door entry to the patio door leading to my wooded backyard; replacing the damaged one of the two HVAC systems (i.e., one for the first floor and basement and the other for the second floor); and whole house interior painting and decorative touches (accent walls, trim, etc.) The external big jobs included Mike and his team resolving the sources of severe water damage to my two-story front door entry area and installing a new door, side lites and stoop. He resolved other water problems at my house by installing upgraded, larger gutters connecting to a new underground drainage system, and re-grading a section of the backyard next to my house in order to better collect water coming onto the house and move it away from the house. The other jobs Mike and his team completed include installing decorative lighting in the front of my house and security lighting at the sides and back; installing and repairing wooden privacy fencing in my backyard; washing away years of mold, mildew and stains from the siding of my house; and installing shelving for two closets and the laundry room to increase my storage space. After years of City Renovations and Remodeling successfully improving or repairing my home, I hired the company to help me with an investment rental property. Mike completed a walk-thru assessment and report to supplement the information from the home inspector and appraiser. Through my pre-purchase consultation with Mike, I got a good idea of what it would take improve the property given my goals and budget. I look forward to working with Mike and his team to renovate the property."

"Two Brothers Handyman are the best! We got Ruben to review our basement full bathroom renovation in a few days of contacting them. Nancy provided a documented estimate and breakdown cost of our project. Nancy & Ruben were amazing in attention scheduling, detailed work and professionalism throughout our renovation. Ruben removed old toilet, vanity, lights and mirror. His team, painted our ceiling, walls, door and wall border; drywalling to fix lightbox; then installed and corrected new lighting alignment to center with vanity and mirror; and toilet. Excellent work ethic and clean. Always checking in to make sure things were where we wanted positioned in the bathroom. We will definitely use Ruben & team again for home improvements. So happy we found them. The great reviews on Two Brothers Handyman are true!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Washington DC, DC

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
